"That guy", my Americaphobe friend, is the great Morgan Freeman:
Morgan Freeman[1] (born June 1, 1937) is an American actor, film director, aviator and narrator. He is noted for his reserved demeanor and authoritative speaking voice. Freeman has received Academy Award nominations for his performances in Street Smart, Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption and Invictus and won in 2005 for Million Dollar Baby. He has also won a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Freeman has appeared in many other box office hits, including Unforgiven, Glory, Seven, Deep Impact, The Sum of All Fears, Bruce Almighty, Batman Begins, March of the Penguins, The Bucket List, Evan Almighty, Wanted, The Dark Knight, and RED.

I realize that you're not particularly keen on American cinema, (sort of in the same way that I'm not particularly keen on Marmite) but I am somewhat surprised that you've never seen The Shawshank Redemption or Unforgiven....(Gee, Unforgiven even had Richard Harris in it 8-) )

Haven't seen Shawshank Redemption, I've overdone my mawkishness quota for this lifetime already. I've seen "Unforgiven," he was in it was he? :)

That is regrettable. I'll bring it when I come visit. ;)

Yes, he was the one with the really good tan....

Maybe you saw Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves....

That one had a couple of British actors in it too....

They even run it on BBC America.... 8-)

Oh no way will I watch that, another desecration of a British legend much in the same way as Mel "it's the Jews Fault" Gibson massacred the Wallace legend.

Did they put an African American in Robin Hood? How novel!

I've heard he's good in this, seen it?

Actually, he played a Muslim Moor who came back with Robin from the Crusades....

American actors are quite versatile...

Yes I have, and he's excellent.

(Of course there's a limit to how good a movie that has rugby as a central theme can be, but his performance still shines, despite that considerable handicap... :P )

Robin Hood went on a crusade? That's a novel idea.

The idea of Robin Hood as a noble who fought in the Crusades and returned to find he had been dispossessed didn't start with Costner's movie...(Personally, I much prefer this sort of high tone version of the Robin Hood legend to the grunting blue collar brawler portrayed by Russel Crowe)

However, I agree that That Brave Heart was absolutely wretched....(Except for Patrick McGoohan's deliciously evil portrayal of Edward The Longshanks...the only thing in the movie worth seeing)

'Freeman, if you haven't heard of him, you have no footing on which to judge American Cinema"

Some say he is the next Walter Cronkite, in that if he supports it; it must be true.

How can anyone have missed Shawshank, or Morgan Freeman? Wow. You should rectify that Gob. Add it to the iPad play list.

I just watched Season 1, episode 1 of Sherlock VIA Netflix tonight. Really terrific, smart, and dark.

I do want to say however, that the Sherlock character is, in looks, intellect, and attitude, exactly how I picture Andrew!

We all saw Mr Ritchie's second film of the character the other night. It seemed appropriate to go whilst in London.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Gob followed it up with another trip to 221B Baker Street yesterday whilst the Hatch and I caught up on our gift shopping at Harrods and Harvey Nics. (I must say I am LOVING the exchange rate at the moment.) 8-)

So I buzzed through the first 2 episodes last night. Will likely watch episode 3 this afternoon, since its snowy and cold here and i'm staying in for the day.

Hoping Netflix has the second series, or I'll be ordering it also.

Geeze, between this and Downton, I'm not watching a bit of American TV these days!

Season 2 not aired in the U.S. until May, and so of course no DVD release either
