USA!! USA!! USA!!

England 1-1 USA
Report
By Sam Lyon & Jonathan Stevenson 17:00 Commentary

By Phil McNulty, Rustenburg

Goalkeeper Robert Green suffered a World Cup nightmare as England were forced to settle for a disappointing draw in the opening game of their campaign against the United States.

Steven Gerrard gave coach Fabio Capello the perfect start to this South African mission when he slid Emile Heskey's pass beyond Tim Howard after only four minutes.

And while England rarely hit the heights, they were maintaining their advantage in relative comfort until five minutes before half-time when West Ham United's Green suffered the lapse that will haunt him.

Clint Dempsey offered an effort that was little more than pot luck from 25 yards, but Green hopelessly allowed the ball to squeeze through him and roll agonisingly over the line as he tried to recover.

Yep, combined with this one!
There's cause for celebration, for the result, and the spectacle. This was a cracking opening game between South Africa and Mexico that finished aptly level at 1-1.

This is "soccer" right?

That game that drunken British "Hooligans" have a fondness for? 8-)

I'm sorry, I thought the expression "soccer hooligans" was generally applied to the British...

I didn't realize that it could only be fairly applied to the English....

My mistake.... 8-)

Where to start...

Maybe with the poster who hates football but comes out of the woodwork to cheer on whoever is playing England...

...or the one who insists on using the word "soccer" to describe the original football from which all others are derived not to mention believes that anyone who happens to be English and enjoy the game is a hooligan...

...or even back to the first poster who is somehow labouring under the mistaken belief that the Welsh and the Scots are civilised...

...nah, I don't think I'll bother. :)

*Psst Hen* Australia have three games in the tournament come what may so they can get stuffed by Serbia and Ghana too before they fly home... ;)

And that's when they win the toss at the start of the game!

I thought the lap of honour was a bit much though... ;)

You have to admit Sean, that the England goalie's fumble was a classic! ;)

Not sure classic is the right word mate... ;)

The English press always need a scapegoat when England go out of a tournament. Unless they now go on and win the damn thing he's put his name up early.

"The Hand of Clod" was the banner headline in one of the red-tops. :D

LMAO Now you're taking the piss! :D

I'm glad he held up a hand to say "My fault" otherwise nobody might've noticed his error and assumed it was a 30 yard net-buster!
