Bibliography

The only source for Rose Will Monroe is her 2 June 1997 obituary in the New York Times. Most of the sources on Rosie the Riveter do not focus on an individual "Rosie." These include Maureen Honey's Creating Rosie the Riveter: Class, Gender, and Propaganda during World War II (1984), which examines how various government agencies encouraged working and middle-class women to enter the industrial work force, and Penny Colman's Rosie the Riveter: Women Working on the Home Front in World War II (1995), which provides many statistics and photographs of women in the industrial and civilian workforces during World War II. In 1982 Connie Field published, with Miriam Frank and Mirlyn Ziebarth, The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter: The Story of Three Million Working Women during World War II, based on her 1980 documentary film.

Yes Lo?

Most of the sources don't focus on an individual Rosie. These sources don't subscribe to the REAL Rosie that you were claiming.

However, the other ones I have given you do. And none of them were black.

Cheers M'dear. It is what I have been saying.

I am sure she has a good explanation for why she wrote such tripe in the first place.

But at least Lo seems to have changed her mind about it.

It's a sad state of affairs. In thread after thread she has been proven to either have no point at all, or to be just making shit up which she hasn't a clue about.

Why does she do it?

I have no idea.

I do know that the majority of women working in munitions factories were black and hispanic.

I do know that racism was rife in America in the 40s.

I do know that there are a number of white women that make up the figure that is known as 'Rosie the Riveter'.

I do know that the 'real' Rosie was an amalgamation of these women.

Is it fair that hipanics and blacks were not incorporated as well? No. But then look at the era it came from. Hell, it is commendable that WOMEN (in general) were recognised for their efforts back then.

Can that be changed? No. It's history.
Tips for Managing Women
– a document compiled for male supervisors during WW2.
“Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women Employees

Image

There’s no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient women available and how to use them to the best advantage. Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject from western Properties:

1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they’re less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldn’t be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.

2. When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It’s always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.

3. General experience indicates that “husky” girls – those who are just a little on the heavy side – are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.

4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination – one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job.

5. Stress at the outset the importance of time – the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.

6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they’ll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but lack initiative in finding work themselves.

7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.

8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowance for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.

9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can’t shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman – it breaks her spirit and cuts her efficiency.

10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl’s husband or father may swear vociferously, she’ll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.

11. Get enough size variety in operator’s uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can’t be stressed too much in keeping women happy.

Because you respond, repeatedly - as does Hen, as does Sean, Scooter, etc. - and in the past few months this place has devolved into one that could easily be known as Plan B, subtitled: 'All loCA, all the time'

The 'attention whore' has found a captive, seemingly entranced, audience.

So what was the point of the 'foe' feature?

:(

I'm sorry, but occasionally my sadness over what this place has become these last few months just must be vented. My apologies for raining on a parade that everyone else seems to enjoy.

eta: I don't like how loCA has behaved here in recent months any more than many of you who are interacting with her. I don't like her 'quoting' people after totally changing their words, I don't like her lying, I don't like her trolling, etc. I think a lot of what she says is downright silly and the arrogance she displays in posting easily provable untruths is damned annoying, I agree.

But watching a gang-up on her in thread after thread is no more fun than watching the popular kids in school bullying the special ed kid. I recognize that you are all free to do whatever you like here and I respect that if you want to engage her over and over and over and over again, it's your collective and individual right to do so. I'm just expressing that it seems like it would be a better thing for the board atmosphere if everyone who can't stand her just put her on 'foe' setting and ignored the hell out of her. Maybe, just maybe, she'd get a fucking clue and go the fuck away. But even if she didn't, the threads would not be repeatedly clogged up with 'All loCA, all the time'.

This place was really nice before this all started last late winter/early spring. Now, not so much. I am beginning to think that it will never be so nice again.

JMHO.

Yes, I think I'll join you.

BTW, to add someone to "foe" or "ignore", go to their profile, there is a "foe" link there.

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

I agree with bigskygal - your daughter does seem like a lovely young lady.

Sean - I presume you were having a laugh over the way those last three posts seemed to progress ? - I must admit, they flowed well and read a bit oddly to me at first! I hadn't clicked on the picture when I first read it, so I didn't realise, at first, that the comments were in relation to the photo. They did make for a funny little sequence of posts!! :-)

I'm glad this thread got bumped; I had never read the article Hen posted about how to manage women employees...

A lot of good, practical, useful information in there....

Isn't it amazing how something written 60 plus years ago can still be so relevant and accurate today?

Ha, LJ! :fu

Sean, I have the troll on ignore and generally don't read her posts. I hadn't even seen that she'd replied first. I can see the humor - you must've thought I was posting drunk!
