And Washington makes eight

Post by Scooter »

Calling it “a day that historians will mark as a milestone for equal rights,” Washington governor Christine Gregoire signed into law a state marriage equality bill introduced just weeks ago.

“It is the right step. We have finally said yes to marriage equality,” Gregoire said during an exuberant Monday ceremony at the state capitol in Olympia. “The sky-will-fall rhetoric is simply not true. “

The law, which makes Washington the seventh state plus the District of Columbia to offer marriage rights to same-sex couples, is scheduled to go into effect on June 7, unless anti–marriage equality groups gather enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot, which they have vowed to do.

Before that can happen, the bill has to be received by the Washington Secretary of State's office, and a spokeswoman in the office said the measure should be filed by the end of Monday. Opponents are expected to file their request for a referendum as well by day's end.

In a triumphant address before marriage equality supporters, Gregoire thanked the efforts of lawmakers on both sides of the debate, the courage of gay and lesbian youth and the parents who support them, and, with tears in her eyes, her two daughters, who told her that marriage equality was the “defining civil rights issue of their time.”

Gregoire was introduced by state senator Ed Murray and representative Jamie Pedersen, two gay lawmakers who were leaders in their respective chambers for the bill’s passage. Murray praised Gregoire for her “leadership, passion, and courage.”

Note the abuse of language.

People who would like the definition of "marriage" to remain as it has been for millennia, and as it is in 99% of the civilized world, are the "anti-" crowd, and the ones who want to turn it up side down are for "equality." Priceless.

Many political movements succeed because those on one side are strident and those on the other side don't particularly care.

Exhibit A.

And I suppose claiming that those seeking marriage equality are out to "destroy marriage" and that legalizing same-sex marriage will lead to the downfall of civilization as we know it are not being strident...

What's "priceless" is how dgs49 keeps thinking that equality is a bad thing simply because it upsets tradition.

What's priceless is that one of these days, one of Dave's grandchildren is going to contract a same-sex marriage and I want to be around to witness the apoplexy.

One of the forces which drove the modern Feminist movement in the 60s and 70s was that when Republican Senators and Congressmen looked across the room at their daughters they could not deny them full access to all of the potential they could have; even though their own party was violently anti-women.

One of the forces which steadily erodes the gay-hate of the Republican agenda is that so many of their cousins, and neighbors, and even sons and daughters are gay and while they would easily support brutality and hate otherwise they cannot do so when it is one of their own; not so easily.

Harvey Milk changed the world with the 'coming out' movement. We owe him a lot. He changed the tide of history.

The real question is which states are so backwards and governed by troglodytes that they will be last?

How evil and how stupid do you have to be to hate homosexuals that much?

Just waiting to see ...
