....which swivel-eyed, bible-thumping, lunatic.......

no
Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

It's a high price to pay for cheap laughs Sue.

Well at least (if one is anti Republican) the wicked evil are paying for it...
Sometimes it seems as though one has to cross the line just to figger out where it is

If you believe that Barack Obama's re-election is "inevitable," then you don't have a firm grasp of American politics...
but then we all knew that....

Re: When all is said and done
At this point it seems unlikely that any of them can make a decent enough pitch to convince centrist independents to vote for them and it gets even more unlikely as time goes on. especially since Mitt fell into the McCain trap of blowing what ever centrist cred you may have once had by spending the primaries pandering to the base far right wing of the party.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: When all is said and done
I'm no expert but it seems to me the more the right (or left for that matter) demand philosophical purity from their candidates the more they're going to marginalize themselves.
Personally I'm wondering on how many (more) winnable seats in congress the Dems are going to lose by running insider party hacks.

Maybe I overestime the intelligence of the American people voters, maybe enough of them are dumb enough to vote for one of the swivel-eyed, bible-thumping, lunatics on offer from the republican party into ofice.......

Re: When all is said and done
CP, despite the nasty nomination fight, and the other burdens McCain carried, (an unpopular war, being the standard bearer of a party with a highly unpopular incumbent, and a charismatic opponent with hugely effective campaign machine) throughout the summer of 2008, the race was neck and neck, with the lead changing in the polls many times... By early September, immediately after the GOP convention, McCain had pulled in front by six points, and it looked like the momentum was with him....since Mitt fell into the McCain trap of blowing what ever centrist cred you may have once had by spending the primaries pandering to the base far right wing of the party.
It took three more whammies to give Obama the margin of victory he enjoyed...
1.Palin's becoming a distraction which turned her presence on the ticket from a net plus, (which it was in the aftermath of her convention speech) into a net negative...
2. Three horrendous McCain debate performances.
3. Most importantly, the near collapse of the financial sector a month and a half before election day, and McCain's ham handed responses to it.
Both sides in this race are starting out with about 47% of the vote. The election is about the remaining six per cent. If Romney is the nominee he can capture enough of that vote to win depending on the condition of the economy. (Ironically the doubts about Romney's sincerity on some of the more right-wing positions he has articulated recently will actually be a plus for him in the general election race)
I'd say Obama has to be favored at this point, but his re-election is by no means certain...
The whole focus of the debate will be vastly different next fall than it is today.

Re: When all is said and done
It very well could be but at this point I don't see a clear path to Romney grabbing the center. The best bet I see him having now is driving up apathy while energising his base.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: When all is said and done
It is the nature of primary elections that the candidates (a) emphasize their differences, and (b) cater to the most dedicated partisans, who are the main primary voters.
Four years ago at this time, the Dems were doing the same thing, except that on the left the Left Wing Loonies are indistinguishable from anyone else in the party, so they don't stick out as much.
The most critical factor for the Republicans is ending this race by June, one way or another, so that the candidate will have the maximum amount of time to focus the national dialog on Barry's failed presidency. So far, Barry has been given a "pass" on the horrific unemployment situation (masked by devious BLS statistics), the wasting of more than a trillion dollars in "stimulus" funding, failure to do anything to increase national energy production, and on, and on, and on.
The longer we have to point the finger at his collossal failures the better our chances.
Fortunately, both the House and the Senate will be run by Republicans after January, so Barry's harm will be at least manageable. He will never be able to nominate another hack to the USSC like he did last time.

Re: When all is said and done
that's why it rapidly narrowed down to the two most centrist candidates.
