Good on you for the efforts you're taking. :-)

We're taking things 'season by season' with our old dog. There's that part that wants him to be with us forever, and that part that doesn't want him to be suffering too much just because we don't want to make that horrible decision. So far, thanks to our wonderful vet and some seemingly miraculous but constant medication, he got through last winter - which he wasn't supposed to get through, by initial indications, then Spring, Summer, and here it is Autumn... Every time I quietly start worrying about whether 'this is it' he almost seems to have a 'new lease', and we are always making sure he gets constant 'quality time'. The vet is saying don't get your hopes up past this Winter - but we'll just keep watching him and monitoring. The vet will help us to know when enough is enough. He's doesn't really look his age, and he's loyal. It's going to be hard. My kids don't remember a life without him.
... And our younger, mentally challenged, dog - the 'pup' - is actually only about three years younger, so we've started to realise that he's actually classified as 'senior' nowadays. ... And the cat's older than all of them ... So we're in for some sorrow in the next few short years :-( It's the one thing I really hate about having pets ... having to say Goodbye. It never gets easier. :(

I didn't mean to make this about me and my pets, sorry. But I'm really feeling everything you're going through. And sincerely think it's great that you're looking after him so well in his twilight years. It's the time when good dog owners know they can give a little back for all those years of faithful service their dog has given (and is still trying to give). :ok

Not so good news.

Unfortunately his condition has taken a turn for the worse. His heart is not pumping out the fluid in his abdomen and lungs.

He's been given a jab to try to boost the diuretics he is on. His diuretics have been doubled.

He’s almost totally blind, but not in any physical distress.

If there’s no improvement in his condition over the weekend, the coup de grace will be given Monday.

Sad for you Gob (and Hen and Hatch).

Very sorry to hear it. But it sounds as though Barney could not have had a better home, or more devoted people.

Ok, good news (ish)

The doubling of his diuretics, and an increase in his anti-inflammatories means he's now made a slight recovery, good enough for him to be granted a stay of execution.

The dog is not suffering, and yesterday had a fantastic walk down by the lake, which he obviously relished. (photos below)

We've put off his final vets visit until there is a change.

We now have a mop and bucket on standby for when he has a little "accident".

He's now being walked four times or more a day, (one main walk, then a lot of short walks to keep the fluid moving through him.)

Walking a blind dog is an adventure in itself.

He's still very loving and wanting to be with us, so we'll not deny him that until he starts showing signs of suffering.

Here's some shots from yesterday's walk.

Great to hear that the old boy's rallying...

Seems to me like he wants to enjoy every moment he has left, and does not want "to go quietly into that good night"....

Good for him.

Fucking pets.

Woke up this morning and the other dog of the house, Millie, had vommitted up more blood than I would have thought she had in her.

Off to the vets now to see why.

Fuck it.
Bah!

It's never ending with the fuckers now. And I put my back out yesterday, just to add to the fun.

Way I feel now Jim....

Millie is at the vets for observations, she's been given two jabs, an antibiotic and an anti-nausea. It depends now whether she responds to just TLC, or if she needs an operation. The vet reminded us we had a similar occurrence with her once before when she had a gastric rupture.

Millie recovered without the need for surgery, so that's a small blessing. She's now back to her normal belligerent self.

Barnum's heart problems seems to be under control, but he's now blind as a bat.

Some nights we get almost a whole night's kip without him waking us by getting trapped in a closet.
