How much do you make?
How much do you make?
Actually, this isn't about you. Sorry.
What this is about is a recent development here in Calif. where a lot of public employees salaries are now public information. This is an great idea in several ways; First of all these are public employees and the taxpayers (and others, a lot of UC salaries are not from tax money) deserve to know what they are paying. Second, when things are done openly and honestly they are more likely to be just than if they are hidden; you'll think longer and harder about 'fairness' if you know that everyone is going to see the result. And last, its better to make decisions based on the truth rather than vague generalities.
You can use this link and scroll down to the list below. Data bases are searchable by name, position, salary range, &c. Check out UCSC and see if Angela Davis makes more than you do! (2008-2009 academic year):

Re: How much do you make?
My salary has always been subject to FOIA.
I can't believe CA has gotten away this long without acknowledging that theirs are too...

My salary is a matter of public record, too.

You must eat a lot of roughage.
eta: I clear around $15k/yr.
Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

I'm an American omnivore and the U.S. Constitution guarantees that the number of my daily bowel movements cannot be mandated.
Re: How much do you make?
Actually they can, unfunded mandates just mean leaner meaner movements...Joe Guy wrote:I'm an American omnivore and the U.S. Constitution guarantees that the number of my daily bowel movements cannot be mandated.

My employer gives me a shiny penny every week!
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: How much do you make?
You da man, CP.
Seriously, I work for the people.
Neither prosecutors nor public defenders are highly paid at the local/State level. I moved to the prosecutor's office in part for a modest salary increase, but mostly for the experience in an office with better staff support & other resources - and better health insurance. I'm free to focus on lawyering in my present job, because I have a legal secretary who does the mail and answers the phone - things I did myself as a PD.
I expect to be back working for the PD in about another year, as the local deputy has a retirement date planned and I've got my eye on the job.

Re: How much do you make?
I haven't had to make the decision yet, but I'm leaning heavily toward no.
My needs are modest, but chief among them is living someplace beautiful. I just spent 5 hours driving across Montana today; I never get tired of the landscape here, and seeing wildlife with every passing mile.
If I die tomorrow, my student loans die with me. I think I'd rather chip away at them steadily while working in a community that I love, where I'm respected, doing work that feels truly meaningful to me; than being a cog in the machinery of an industry I don't respect.
I guess I should have said very, very heavily.

Re: How much do you make?
I can't say I blame you. In the "quality of life" vs "income" balancing act, the scales always tip towards quailty for me.

Re: How much do you make?
I'm with bsg and Gob. I'm now making roughly what I made in the mid 80s (in actual dollars), but I love my job, and I love the small(ish) town we live in. We're so broke we can barely pay attention, but the fates seem to intervene when things get scary -- last month it was going to be a decision between the water bill and the phone bill, (not to mention putting off part of the rent until this month!) and, just like that, the SO sold three paintings!
