The standard is general health other than the defective heart. ROI, so to speak. If a 30-year-old has other organ problems and a bad heart to boot, why waste the organ on her?

I doubt very seriously that Medicare paid for this operation. Anyone conversant with the relevant regs?

Whether Medicare paid for it or not isn't relevant. There are only so many donor hearts to go around, and I find it highly doubtful that a 70+ year old was seen as the best prospect for survival on the list.

I'm not scared of dying,
And I don't really care.
If it's peace you find in dying,
Well then let the time be near.
If it's peace you find in dying,
And if dying time is here,
Just bundle up my coffin
'Cause it's cold way down there.
I hear that its cold way down there.
Yeah, crazy cold way down their.

Chorus:

And when I die, and when I'm gone,
There'll be one child born
In this world to carry on,
to carry on.

Now troubles are many, they're as deep as a well.
I can swear there ain't no heaven but I pray there ain't no hell.
Swear there ain't no heaven and I pray there ain't no hell,
But I'll never know by living, only my dying will tell.
Yes only my dying will tell.
Yeah, only my dying will tell.

Chorus

Give me my freedom for as long as I be.
All I ask of living is to have no chains on me.
All I ask of living is to have no chains on me,
And all I ask of dying is to go naturally.
Oh I want to go naturally.

Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.
Look out children,
Here he comes!
Here he comes! Hey...

Don't want to go by the devil.
Don't want to go by demon.
Don't want to go by Satan,
Don't want to die uneasy.
Just let me go naturally.

and when I die,
When I'm dead, dead and gone,
There'll be one child born in our world to carry on,
To carry on.
Yeah, yeah...

If he had as much influence as you seem to think, why did he have to wait two years for the organ?

He wasn't in a hurry?

I see that not even you are going to argue that a 70+ year old man would have been seen as being the best candidate for a heart transplant among the thousands who were waiting for one.

My first thought on seeing this was "not transplant, but implant"....

ETA: I'm sure I'm not alone in this. :|

Over 65 generally aren't considered for transplants; only a very few percentage are in that age range.

dgs gets his information about transplant medicine from the same source that informed him pediatricians play with women's wombs.

This transplant is analogous to a wealthy public figure being credibly accused of a crime. The common perception is that the wealthy public figure will be handled with kid gloves, but often the opposite proves the case. The head prosecutor (usually elected) bends in the other direction because s/he knows that the decision and prosecution of the case will get a lot of publicity. Hence, public figures are often sent to jail for offenses that would have resulted in probation and/or a fine for non-public person.

The agencies handling Cheney's transplant application knew that if he got an organ at his age, the decision would be scrutinized mercilessly in the press. They would be subject not only to criticism but possibly to lawsuits when other candidates died without a heart. Those agencies have make public statements and said their decision-making process was the same as always. But Cheney could live another 50 years and our Libs will still be saying he was too old and unhealthy to have gotten it legitimately.

He has cost us more than 2 trillion dollars so far; more than 100 years worth of AFDC, ( $20 B/yr at its peak before Clinton killed it.

Worth it if his survivival means we can now try him for war crimes.

Wow! Sue... I admire your courage. Thank you. 8-)

It often takes years to bring war criminals and human rights abusers to justice; I still hold out hope.
