In a desperate effort to to get the image of a naked Rachel Maddow out of my head, and replace it with...

Well, replace it with anything...

I started wondering about why leopards haven't completely out competed cheetahs into extinction...

They are roughly the same size, and they both hunt and raise their young alone....they essentially occupy the exact same niche on the African grasslands....

But the leopard has a huge competitive advantage....

It can climb; which the cheetah cannot....

Being able to climb, means that it can get it's kills out of the reach of bigger cats like lions, and also hyenas... (and cheetahs, for that matter)...

It also means that it can get its cubs out of the reach of those predators as well...

I've got nothing against cheetahs, (they are beautiful and graceful animals, and I'm glad they've managed to hang in) but I'm puzzled as to why the leopard, when it occupies the same niche in the same geographical range, with such a big natural survival advantage, hasn't completely out-competed it.
