Lotto Upwards Of $600 Million

Post by dales »

It's all over the news.

I'd love to see some filthy rich person win the whole thing.

(Never purchased a ticket before and just happened to buy one on a lark)

The odds to win are one in 200 million.

So, in order to guarantee that I'd win I got a group together and pooled enough money to buy 2,000,001 tickets.

I expect a nice return on my investment.

It looks like you're a couple of decimal places off.

But even if you bought a ticket for every number combination, there's no guarantee you'd be the only winner. If 10 people picked the same numbers, you'd have to split the prize with them and end up losing a fortune.

Though I wouldn't say no to a couple of million, a win that big would be such a huge life changer I don't know if I'd actually want to win that much.

Reminds me of an old joke;

Wife: "Seeing as we've won $650 million on the lottery, what should we do about all the begging letters?"
Husband: "Keep sending them!"

If I win, I'll be dropping some spare change on paying off all my friends' mortgages, student loans, etc.

No need to thank me; I'm just generous that way. ;)

I doubt you'd do too badly out side of pools I've rarely heard of many more than 3 winners (especially when dealing with odds this big) not to mention you'd have 45 other $250,000 prizes and 280 $10,000 prizes that don't get divided. Also you can deduct your losing tickets from your winnings leaving you with a severely diminished tax burden. One more thing is a healthy fraction of what you invested will also be coming back in winnings. My guess is you're gonna be looking at a pretty healthy ROI even with 3 winners

Oh No!!!!

And I don't think there's enough time for me to make up the difference!

Hold on.

I've got to make a few phone calls.

Thanks, Scooter!

390 million.. Just in time...

The 390 million-lump sum.....

Even with state and federal taxes, that would leave you with about 240 million dollars; free and clear..

Just about as rich as Mitt Romney...

The search is on in the US for the winners of the world's biggest ever lottery jackpot - $640m (£400m).

Three tickets have now been announced as sharing the massive prize, with the winners in the states of Maryland, Kansas and Illinois.

Americans spent an estimated $1.5bn to enter the draw for the jackpot, which had reached the record level because no-one had matched the winning numbers since the end of January.

Forty-two states took part in the draw.

The numbers drawn on Friday night were 2, 4, 23, 38, 46, and the Mega Ball was 23.
Ok, if any of our members win this, I'll expect them to fund PlanB forever.

Just wait for the buggers to come out and say, "It won't change my life!"

Well give it back then!

Well my office pool didn't win, but I'm pretty sure Econoline has the Illinois ticket.

Just give me your money next time, I'll guarantee a better return.

Lotteries are simple, they are a tax on the mathmatically challenged.

Studies show most who buy lottery tickets make <$10K per year.

I make $50k+ and despite knowing the odds, I bought 10 tickets.

That $10, which would barely buy me a night out at a 2 hour movie, bought me two days' worth of daydreaming about all the secret random acts of kindness I would engage in, about the world travel I would engage in, about the philanthropic foundation I would establish and the $25 million I would donate to Planned Parenthood on behalf of Rick Santorum (earmarked for abortions only, of course) - etc.

It was money well spent! :D

Of course!

I was planning on paying all your mortgages (or buying you houses, as the case may be), educating your kids, and funding a yearly FtF for everyone - along with funding the board in perpetuity.

All that would be just spare change with $300 million, after all!
