Re: Oldr & BigRR
Thanks for everytones concern. Short version
In september I took a job as the maytag repairman as no engineering jobs were on the horizon. That was going ok but in Demeber I started drinking again aand proceeded to drink my way out of a job in february. February 25th checked into a detox/crisis center and spent two wweks there then went to a rehab clinic for 4 weeks and just got out yesterday. Six weeks total away from home and family and 6 weks sober. Will be posting more just trying to catch up.
Thanks for the concern and will post more next week. Happy Easter everyone.

Man, is it good to be back in touch.
No offence meant old mate, but a number of us were concerned that exactly the sort of thing that your tale relates had happened,. and we were genuinely worried about you.
Thanks for putting our minds at ease.

Glad to see your name again Oldr.
Never beat yourself up for falling off the wagon. Just do what you are doing and try and get back on it again.
You are much loved and we miss you when you aren't here.

Re: Oldr & BigRR
Oldr, I have to tell you, I had imagined some pretty dire scenarios; I'm really glad that it sounds like you still have your health, haven't gotten into any legal trouble and most importantly that your family continues to stand by you...
I also have to say that I have really seen the struggles you have experienced as a cautionary tale...
One does not normally associate what you have been going through with a successful, professional upper middle class middle aged family man....
These sorts of things are normally associated with people who are younger, or who have less going for them...
People who I really can't identify with much...
But I can identify with you. As I recall you and I fairly close in age; when I think that someone who was in your situation could have their life fall apart so badly, it really creates a "there but for the grace of God..." sort of reaction in me...If that could happen to someone like you, why couldn't it happen to me?
I admit, it's a little psychologically disturbing...

Re: Oldr & BigRR
There are probably more of them than you might think, and while I don't have any scientific basis for saying so, my gut tells me that it has a lot to do with people who, having achieved a lot in their life, have a degree of overconfidence in their ability to keep their alcohol and/or drugs use under control. Some people can, but a lot of people cannot and don't even realize it is becoming a problem precisely because they don't identify themselves with the typical portrait of a drug addict. (I don't suggest in any way that this is oldr's experience, particularly since he seems to be very clear about when he needs to get help to get himself back on track, for which I commend him and wish him all the best.)Lord Jim wrote:One does not normally associate what you have been going through with a successful, professiona. upper middle class middle aged family man....

Hang in there buddy. It is a very difficult road you are traveling. Try not to dwell on the past but focus on the present and the future, that is where your needs are.
I expect to go straight to hell...........at least I won't have to spend time making new friends.

Glad you've pulled out of that tailspin and are flying straight and level again. The climb back up might be slow but the view is worth it.

By now you know the alternative is much WORSE. Slipping into the darkness often give you a chance to see the light more clearly. Learn from it. One day is good... six weeks is better. Support is absolute, use every resource available.
