Gee this forum sure has become unpopular....
GOB. ARE YOU THERE?
I got your forum update email a short time ago. Thank you.
Anyway, after two days (+) of nothing but error messages, I was finally able to get through (I think) but the system is running very, very, slowly. The wait time for each page to display is maddening so I'll just check in for the next day or so until things get back to "normal."
Hopefully, all will be well... sooner than later. See ya' and thanks.

Re: Gee this forum sure has become unpopular....
It looks like we may be back in business....(still not 100% up to speed, but fast enough to be functional)
Let's see if it holds up for the next few hours...

Re: Gee this forum sure has become unpopular....
I'll be doing a spamming blitz of everyone who has ever posted here , once we have reasonable speed posting again.

BTW Ray, as you are new to this board, let me assure you that this sort of thing is not a normal occurrence...
Now and then (fairly rarely, overall) we've had down times ranging from a few minutes to several hours (which would happen with any website with any webhost....no technology ever runs flawlessly) but this multi-day situation has never happened before; and hopefully will not recur.

Just checking in...
I received an email from Gob telling me that Plan B's table legs were defective and carpenters are on the way but he doesn't know when they will arrive.
I'll try not to post too much. I don't want to overload the table.

Perfectly understandable Dale...I thought my ip address had been banned!
Afterall, you do have a record in that regard...

Re: Gee this forum sure has become unpopular....
Still a bit slow (15-20 seconds per click) but MUCH better (here on the left coast with all the folks who read/post from work just logging in...)
Re: Gee this forum sure has become unpopular....
So....I just went over to another forum that says it's "Powered by phpBB® Forum Software © phpBB Group " and it is running perfectly normally.
Should we be taking this personally (or am I completely missing something technical that's obvious to most everyone else...?)

Kristina, the problems that we've experienced the last few days haven't had anything to do with the forum software or scripts...or anything else "site specific"...like hacking, a virus, etc.)
They've been due to a screwup that occurred on the webhost server that the site is hosted on. Any site that was hosted with that webhost on that server would have been experiencing the same problems.

Re: Gee this forum sure has become unpopular....
Our problems were prolonged and compounded by the way the webhost, (DreamHost) chose to deal with the problem.
Several years ago, I had a similar problem come up with a site (a drop ship store site, so the interruption was costing me money) that was hosted on a shared server with a webhost of comparable size to DreamHost. (Which is to say a fairly large company with a lot of server resources available)
They handled it completely differently. After about two hours of the server having gone wonky, I got an email from them telling me that there was a problem with the server, and that it would take awhile to fix, and that therefore they were going to migrate the accounts on that server to another server while they fixed the problem. (If you look at their website, it is quite clear that DreamHost has the server capacity to have done this...They must have, because they had enough capacity to continue selling dedicated server space....they have boatloads of server capacity)
My recollection is that the site then went down for about six hours, after which time they had completed migrating the accounts, and it worked just fine after that.
Instead of doing that, DreamHost decided to keep the accounts on the screwed up server while they tinkered with it, trying to fix the problem.
Which resulted in about 3 days worth of complete dysfunctionality for the sites hosted on the server. (And it's still not up to snuff...hopefully it will go back to the speed it had before...I hope this mid-90's loading speed isn't going to be considered acceptable to them as "the new normal".)
What I find kind of amusing is that if you look over their site, they are obviously trying to market themselves as a kind of "hip" populist oriented enterprise that has a philosophy that is very customer responsive....
However in the event, instead of being "customer friendly" they turned out to be more "customer fiendly"...
ETA:
In other words, what the other webhost did, was to consider getting their customers back up and running as their primary responsibility, and consider getting their server fixed as their secondary concern....
DreamHost appears to have taken the opposite view....
In my opinion, what the folks at DreamHost ought to do now, is send out an apology to all of the affected account holders, not just for the inconvenience, but for the way they handled it, and promise that if anything like that should happen again they won't handle it the same way, and then offer some sort of "make good." (like a two month cost free hosting extension for the customers)
And this email ought to come from the CEO...
That's what I would suggest if I were advising them, but of course they haven't asked me for my advice....

Howdy y'all!
This is the first time I've been able to login from rural Montana since the start of The Dreamhost Troubles.
It still took way too long for a reply window to load, so I'll continue my break until someone lets me know that we're back to full capacity.
Cheers!

Re: Gee this forum sure has become unpopular....
Still slow as old bollocks, and I'm still getting this message.
They have not replied to my last two mails either.Current Outage: Hardware failure on hosting machine andromeda (updated 9 mins 31 secs ago)
Hello,
Here is an update on the ongoing restore for your shared web hosting server, andromeda.
The server continues experience intermittent high loads and slowness from the backup server which may be causing slowness and/or timeout errors for your sites. Some slowness is to be expected until more data is restored to local disk, but our admins are continuing to work on getting the load to a more manageable level. Sites are being served from backups and the restore process continues to execute.
In the meantime, if a PHP-based sites appear to be timing out you might try switching to running "PHP CGI" mode in the Domains / Manage Domains section of the panel. CGI mode has a different timeout setting than FastCGI mode and that may help if your site it running slowly because of the restore. We will send an update when it's safe to switch back again.
We are also aware that some of the users aren't being mounted properly from the backup server. If you find you are having any issues with your hosting or are missing any data, please contact our support team with any details you can provide, and we will be happy to assist!
Thanks!
