Oh now they're being far too modest....

The one thing they have been doing since this business began, is mounting the users properly....

I'm sure that at this point all the users feel properly mounted....

BTW there is a photo of one of their "employee staff" (who's listed as a "senior developer") that I think really encapsulates the attitude that DreamHost has exhibited towards it's customers that have been affected by this far more effectively than can be expressed in words:

You're getting old Jim! :nana

Unfortunately it's all still as slow as all bollocks here, so I haven't e-mailed anyone yet to try to tempt people back.

The host site is still giving;

Hello,

Here is an update on the ongoing restore for your shared web hosting server, andromeda.

The server continues experience intermittent high loads and slowness from the backup server which may be causing slowness and/or timeout errors for your sites. Some slowness is to be expected until more data is restored to local disk, but our admins are continuing to work on getting the load to a more manageable level. Sites are being served from backups and the restore process continues to run as fast as possible.

In the meantime, if a PHP-based sites appear to be timing out you might try switching to running "PHP CGI" mode in the Domains / Manage Domains section of the panel. CGI mode has a different timeout setting than FastCGI mode and that may help if your site it running slowly because of the restore. We will send an update when it's safe to switch back again.

We are also aware that some of the users aren't being mounted properly from the backup server. If you find you are having any issues with your hosting or are missing any data, please contact our support team with any details you can provide, and we will be happy to assist!

Thanks!

It appears we're still suffering from the andromeda strain....

After 5 days of first completely dysfunctional, and then sub-standard service, it still hasn't occurred to these guys that maybe what they ought to do is move the accounts on this server to one of their other numerous servers.....

They don't have any other servers. That seems obvious to me.

If they had any redundancy at all built into their systems, this would never have happened.

Are you saying that their nome site is hosted by a different company?
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Daisy, take a look at their website. They sell not just shared plans but dedicated server space. They couldn't do that if they didn't have more server space than they're using.

I vote we migrate elsewhere.

It took me five minutes to login and vote; I'm in a time warp to the days of dial-up!

I'm thinking the same way BSG. But I'd like Daisy and RB to offer their thoughts on that, (as I'd probably fuck it up.)

Bugger of it is that we paid last month for another year's worth of hossting.

We should be eligible for a refund on the remaining 10 months, given we're going on a week of terrible service.

Moving a forum to another server with another company is a bitch to do - I've done it once or twice and would be in no hurry to do it again.

Dreamhost is my host of choice, I've been with them for over 8 years now, and I run my employers website via a Dreamhost account as well as several not for profit sites I've set up for various groups I have been involved with. There is nothing about Dreamhost so far which would entice me away, beleive me I have been with some top rated hosts prior to joining Dreamhost and there hasnt been a single one of them that has given me the service Dreamhost has, indeed Lunarpages changed TOC's on me (and everyone else) midway through a year which effectively meant my site overnight was banned from their servers despite nothing at all about it being any different from the day before - try moving a site under those circumstances - it aint fun trust me.

Yes at the moment DH is having some problems, and yes their laid back approach to communication isnt to everyones taste but compared to some of the brusque and downright patronising customer service I've encountered with other hosting companies, its a breath of fresh air which appeals to me.

In the 8+ years I've been with them I have experienced very little downtime and what downtime there has been has been sorted out fairly quickly, the problem PlanB is currently having is rare in MY experience - yes DH oversells, theres nothing wrong with that and unless we're going to go dedicated (and thats gonna cost BIG bucks) then ANY webhost we choose will be overselling - thats how they keep the prices down and as a usual working practice it works quite well, problems tend to arise when servers aren't "balanced" and lots of heavy traffic sites end up on the same server. My guess is thats whats been happening now and that they'll be attempting to rebalance the loads and thats whats taking the time.

If you want to move then thats fine ... but good luck finding a host that will allow the kind of content we post or link to on occassions AND then be 100% reliable thats a rare animal indeed.
If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you may have misjudged the situation.

Thanks RB.

It was on your advice that I signed up with DH, and I welcome and take onboard your advice on this again.

Everyone else is welcome to give their thoughts on this.

I've found a host which offers unlimited server space, guaranteed 120% uptime, free puppies for every member and a free 200 acre plot on the moon!

It's called Jord Lim's Servers Inc.

I think he must be Swedish or something...

The chances are they are sub leasing server space from one of the very large data centre providers. And reselling it as their own (most smaller hosting companies do this, let's face it they're not Rackspace are they) I'll bet they have one of the cheaper setups with "just enough" provisioning for their customer base and not a massive amount of redundant capacity for if things go titsup.

I vote for moving to Jord Lim's. I like puppies and could use some real estate on the moon.
