Same here; given the smell of the shower this morning, I'll spring for filtered. I saw a portable water filter bottle the other day & wish I'd bought it - I will before my next trip by airplane.

I took 'home' a slice of praline cheesecake. OMFG!!

I stuck my head into River Street Sweets after dinner; luckily I have minimal space in my luggage to bring back a ton of pralines, but I picked up a catalog. Gah!

I'm just going to concede to middle aged spread. ;)

Enough of the fripperies, what beers are in offer!

Last night I had Killian's Irish Red with my low country boil. It was a place with a very limited selection of beers. Today I'm going to Churchill's to decide between curry, roast & Yorkshire pudding, or fish & chips. I'll let you know what beers I try. ;)

An observation:

I understand that our criminal justice system is adversarial, but I don't understand the degree to which so many attorneys practicing within it feel the need to internalize and personalize this.

I have been a public defender and hope to be one again within the next two years; I am now a prosecutor. I am proud of both roles.

I might as well have a third eye when interacting with 'true believers' of either camp. I'm attending this training and learning a lot, but hearing the occasional comments that clearly indicate an intense disregard for defense attorneys. I experienced the same at public defender trainings, too.

Yet, I think I'm the true believer. I can fulfill either role with ethical scrupulousness; if that were true of every prosecutor and defender in this country, we'd have fewer wrongful outcomes and greater integrity in the system.

Southern cuisine strikes me as very rich and filling, but not particularly interesting in terms of flavor palette.

I just had crab stew, spinach salad with a crab cake on the side, and a bear claw for dinner/dessert. It was all fine, but not spectacular.

Perhaps I've not picked the right places to dine? They did come highly recommended.

Tomorrow I'll try again, definitely the British-style pub, as I'm actually getting tired of seafood.

I'd like to be back in Bozeman near that great Thai place. ;)

Southern cuisine
"Southern cuisine" varies a great deal from state to state, and regions within those states...

North Carolina for example, produces the very finest pork barbecue....(slowly cooked with a light vinaigrette and cayenne seasoning, rather than a pasty tomato base... )

The Gulf States, (Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama) on the other hand, produce the best spicy sea food...

I haven't spent much time in Georgia,( I had a two hour lay over in the Airport Lounge in Atlanta once, when I was headed from DC to Miami....that was a good time....)... but I've been to wonderful seafood places in Charleston...

I shouldn't have made such an overly broad statement; my apologies.

I have had BBQ in several Southern states and it is indeed delish; a friend in Maine brought NC BBQ home after every trip to visit family & I agree it's very tasty.

I just haven't yet had a meal in Savannah that was particularly noteworthy - except the praline cheesecake.

Last night's low country boil was good and very much a Southern version of the New England boiled dinner I adore; the best part of the meal was sharing my fried green tomatoes appetizer with a mother/daughter seated at the next table and making one of those random vacation connections in the process (they responded nicely to a random stranger offering them food).

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned (?) this one:
Savannah's tourist industry is acutely aware of the general public's direct association with book and film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil with the city itself. The fever to take advantage of this tourist draw has gotten to the point where it at times approaches life imitating art, with the southern Gothic story having become exaggeratedly associated with the actual identity of the city itself. There are Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil tours and an entire store dedicated to the story called simply The Book. Everywhere that you go in Savannah, Georgia, there are reproductions of the iconic graveyard statue with the girl balancing two empty plates: plastered in the city's welcome center, in hotel lobbies, on tour buses and trolleys and on T-shirts, post cards, shot glasses and every other possible souvenir.

Of course, the Mercer House is at the eye of the literary storm regarding Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil in Savannah, Georgia. It was here that the real life story of Billy Hansen's murder played out, and it was in the very same house that the Hollywood film portraying the story was primarily filmed. In the midst of the architectural pomp of some of the surrounding homes and building in the historic area of Savannah, the Mercer house looks almost shockingly modest when you first come upon the residence at 430 Whitaker Street. However, with a little imagination, you can quickly see Kevin Spacey languidly gesticulating to someone in the doorway, sweating beverage in hand and then see in the minds eye the dark home alight and filled with the guests of one of John Kelso's famous parties.

Some of the other tourist spots for enthusiasts of the story are dotted throughout town. The Bonaventure Cemetery has the grave marking the final resting place of Danny Hansford. The Lady Chablis still performs at Club One Savannah. However, for a detailed account of every nook and cranny associated with Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil in Savannah, and there are plenty, visitor's are best served by taking one of the city's many walking tours that are centered around the book and film.

Today we end at noon and I'm taking a walking tour of Savannah's 22 squares and all the surrounding architecture. I thought about a guided tour, but I don't think I'd enjoy shuffling around with a crowd of strangers. I picked up a self guided walking tour book last night after dinner.

As an aside, whilst so far I've only spent time at the riverfront, I have seen enough to confirm that the South really is the fattest region of the U.S.

Dinner today at Churchill's, which I gather is a 'chain' in that they have at least one other location.

The beer list.

The menu.

Suggestions for beers I should try, Gob?

I'm off to Blowin' Smoke for BBQ lunch.

I got waylaid in City Market; eating on the patio at Anna's, she crab soup followed by seafood au gratin. Good thing I have a few more days to eat here!

Seen on a bumper sticker I almost bought: I think, therefore I'm single.

There are lots of horse drawn carriages of all sizes here in Savannah - some drawn by teams, others by single ponies. The horses look healthy and well cared for, but still seeing them makes me sad. What a life the city cart horse leads. :( I found them magical as a child; oh for the innocence of youth.

The birds here are bold as brass; they fly right down onto tables and steal leftovers from plates that the waitstaff haven't yet cleared.

Oh you are a bit spoiled by that list BSG!!

I just hope they serve it at the right temperature!

My top choices, most favoured first.

Hobgoblin
Wells Bombardier.
Boddingtons.
Black sheep.
Sam Smiths
Newky Broon.

But, seeing as you are a bird, and you know, American, I'd suggest you go straight for a Magners Irish Cider. ;)

Reviews of whichever you try would be welcomed.
