I keep a plastic bottle at work that gets refilled from the water purifiers (filters + activated charcoal).

I do buy Pellegrino sometimes, fizzy water is refreshing.

Speaking of fizzy, what happened to Schweppes Bitter Orange and Bitter Lemon? First Orange vanished then Lemon!

My favorite mixers!

We use 6 bottles refilled from a static filter jug - keep the filled ones in the 'fridge until needed.

After one or two refills, the bottles are no longer sanitary, especially in the summer. Nothing goes to a landfill...I work for a recycling company. The empties go right in the baler.

Not just unsanitary, but not designed to be re-used and leach more chemicals the longer you re-use them.

Get a good stainless steel bottle, or a BPA-free plastic one, wash them regularly, and you're all set.

Savannah has no open container ordinance, so last night I took the remainder of my pint of ale to go.

I was provided a compostable plastic cup made of corn; very sturdy and good quality. Why are these not standard?

Which reminds me -- and then I shall shut up and bury myself in work -- Savannah had , in the 80s, the largest US St. Patty's day celebration outside of NYC. The fountains used to flow green. I will neither confirm nor deny whether that might have been actual green beer or just green fountain water.

Regarding drinking and work:

I've often said If I could drink at work I'd never go home..... I'd never be sober enough to drive.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Normally you would see the first extractions to have more (if any) of the extracted material and then the amount is reduced as it is depleted. Assuming that the conditions are similar.

I'm baffled by the idea that water becomes 'unsanitary' in a sealed bottle. You can grow a little green algae in a Britta water pitcher if you leave it out in the sun but in that case there is a direct path for air, and spores, to get into the solution, a continuous source of carbon (from CO2) to provide a little nutrient and energy to drive growth. But that is more unaesthetic than unsanitary. I don't recall that it ever happened when we kept the Britta pitcher in the refrigerator which say that either light is necessary or that a small temperature difference (75F to 40F) is enough to stop it or a combination of the two. I think I'd vote for light as the primary effect, lots of plants grow at 40F.

Maybe if your water source is less pure than the original contents it can seem unsanitary?

If one drinks directly from the bottle that area may become contaminated, but I'm with Rubato how does water sans any nutrients support pathogenic growth?

As for chemical adulteration from the bottles that is another issue.

Pauline Wyatt ended her Coca-Cola addiction by pouring all 30 bottles she had in her house down the sink.

The New Zealand mother of four used to drink up to 18 litres of Coke a day and says she understands how an Invercargill woman could drink so much of the beverage it contributed to her death.

Last week a pathologist told an Invercargill inquest that Natasha Harris, 30, died of cardiac arrhythmia, agreeing with a coroner that her daily Coca-Cola consumption of between 4.5 and 8 litres had probably caused it.

Mrs Wyatt knows how addictive the carbonated soft drink can be.

"I used to drink 18 litres of coke a day about 18 years ago," said the 38-year-old said. " I just built up to it, just got used to it. It’s a mad thing to do, a mad thing to do."

Mrs Wyatt said she was the victim of an attack when she was 16, and believed the event led to, and fed, her Coke addiction.

"It’s all mental. If something happens in your life, a lot of people turn to drugs or alcohol, and for a lot of bigger people they turn to food. We’re all like it."

Mrs Wyatt still struggles to believe how addicted she became.

"I even had a bottle of Coke beside my bed so when I’d wake up in the middle of the night I’d have a glass of Coke."

"I can’t believe I drank that much (or) that I could even fit it in there," she said.

Apart from weight gain and the odd bout of irritability she experienced from not having her daily dose, the effect of the excessive consumption went largely unnoticed at the time.

Mrs Wyatt’s weight shot up more than 100kg in three years, tipping the scales at 198kg at her heaviest.

She says the wake-up call came one day while drinking a glass of Coke. She felt pain shooting up her arm and through the back of her shoulder. She drove hospital for a check-up.

"I thought I was having a heart attack, but it wasn’t - it was just a scare."

"They advised me not to have any more caffeine.

"I didn’t do it slowly. I had boxes of it sitting there in the house, and I tipped all 30 bottles of it down the sink.

"It felt good. All I had in my head was, ‘I don’t want to die’. If I carried on the way I had been it would have killed me."

Migraine headaches were a part of Mrs Wyatts’ withdrawal symptoms, leaving her bedridden for three days.

"It took a good week to come right again. I just kept downing the water to flush it out of my system."

About three years ago Mrs Wyatt paid $18,000 for a gastric bypass, after suffering knee problems because of her weight.

A diet high in protein and low in sugar had helped keep her weight under 100kg.

"The best thing I did was give up the Coke and get a gastric bypass."

Well, I'm glad she didn't have a single malt scotch addiction....

most employers frown on drinking beer or wine during the work day.
I can vouch for that. :(

We use a Brita picher that we keep in the fridge and fill up reusable water bottles for use outside the home.

In NY (and Ct and Me) there is a nickel deposit on water bottles (this was recently enacted). There also has been a nickel deposit on carbonated beverage bottles but not on juices or gatorade/vitamin type drinks. :shrug
