OK, Hen has it *exactly* right!

If you really want to rock, play all the videos in this thread at once (Zeppelin is blocked in the U.S.) and crank up the sound.
It's a real trip, man.
I'm diggin' it.

Absolutely right. Meat Loaf is, in addition to being an actor, a far superior singer! :pGuinevere wrote:Hmmm, you all know I adore the 62-year-old rocker from NJ (I've already seen him once this year, am seeing him again in September, and trying to fit in one of the August shows in Fenway), but his music *isn't* rock anthem" music, it's about story-telling. Yes, it plays well in a big stadium setting, but the music is far more complex than a "rock anthem," which I think of as loud and repetitive with a simple repeating chorus. That is definitely *not* Thunder Road. Born to Run is closer.
And BTW, putting Bruce in the same category as Meatloaf is just wrong.

Can't argue with that jarl; a comparison of Bat Out of Hell with Thunder Road more than proves it. But then, after his first album, Meatloaf's voice trailed off quite a bit (and losing Steinman as a lyricist didn't help either). But few performers could match Meatloaf at his prime.

"Theme One" was an instrumental piece, originally written by Beatles producer George Martin as a fanfare for the BBC radio station Radio 1, later to appear on US pressings of Pawn Hearts.Lord Jim wrote:Good God, that was hideous.....Grrr.. eat prog!!
Was that supposed to be music? Or an imitation of cats being tortured to death?
You have that kind of taste and you have the temerity to mock my choices?

VDGG do great anthems;
as do King Crimson
and ELP

Dear oh dear oh dear...
I would suggest that there are very few songs in this thread which could be considered rock anthems. It seem that some are just listing songs by their favourite artists without regard for their anthemic properties... no names mentioned of course.
So here are a few that I would consider anthems
Note the absence of anything post 1980... which is roughly the time that rock (with a few exceptions) began to disappear up it's own arse.

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: Okay, Enough Disco Crap..Let's Do....
How the hell did T Rex get in there?!?!

It doesn't matter whether you actually like them or not mate... I can't stand Queen but have to agree that We Will Rock You is a bona fide anthem.

Re: Okay, Enough Disco Crap..Let's Do....
Hmm... Ok, I give you Queen, but T Rex... I will have to give a pass on that one.
But if we're including glam anthems....
T Rex get a name check!

His voice was superb even as late as Bat III (about 6 years ago). He has lost some ranger (he's 64), but still can sing!Big RR wrote:Can't argue with that jarl; a comparison of Bat Out of Hell with Thunder Road more than proves it. Like the dude said, this is from when bands sounded the same live just as they did on vinyl

Ha! Saw them live in Cardiff, brilliant band!! (I'd have gone for "July Morning" as their anthem though. ) I didn't see the best line up. Unfortuantely Gary Thain had done the heroin trick the year before, so I saw the classic line up, Box, Hensley, Kerslake, Byron, sans Thain but with John Wetton on bass.

Jarl--I'll agree, but what he really lost was that intensity he had in the late 70s. I saw him in a small venue right before he caught on, and that intensity blew me away; I never heard such raw passion poured out (even on ballds like For Crying Out Loud). Granted you can't sing like that forever, and tthere were rumors of him almost losing his voice, but IMHO he never quite matched what he did on his first album. Still a good singer (I've seen him in concert a number of times over years), but sadly (and probably understandably) not the same.

The Flats on the Cuyahoga, Cleveland OH OH OH. Only pitch darkness. Mud streets and park at your own risk. Patrol cars and two bars in empty warehouse canyons. Walk at your own risk. Down the steps into the darker dark and three beers quick and Pere Ubu often (yeah and Devo once I seem to remember). Pirate's Cove was the place to be
