SuperGay!

Post by Gob »

DC Comics plans to reintroduce a character as gay in a future issue, it has been revealed.

Co-publisher Dan DiDio previously said that the company would not change the sexual orientation of an existing superhero and would bring in a new one altogether.

But at Kapow Comic Convention in London on Sunday, he revealed that an existing character - who was previously assumed to be straight - will become ‘one of our most prominent gay characters’, according to comic blog BleedingCool.com.

Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne said DiDio’s view ‘had evolved’, comparing the shift to Barack Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

DiDio did not specify which character would ‘come out’ or in which issue it would be featured.

But Courtney Simmons, DC Entertainment’s senior vice president of publicity, told ABC News that it would be soon.

'One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June,' Simmons told the network.[/quote]

It is quite obviously Robin.

The name, the outfit, the lack of relationships with females...

And he goes into a closet as Dick Grayson & comes out as Robin!!

Could it be anymore obvious?

Aquaman isn't gay.

But there is something fishy about him.

P.S. I thought only gay people had gaydars.

Why is there no "How utterly repulsive" option?

..and I have no option to speak for myself  Not even "Oh God I hope it doesn't happen?"

I decided to rule out Green Arrow - surely he's as straight as an . . . ?

And unless Wonder Woman or Batgirl has an even deeper secret, the final line that "he" will reveal his gaiety kind of cuts them both out - unless it was a double bluff...

"Flash" is a bit obvious but he (ahem) arrives to quickly

Robin... no, isn't he still a teenager? Could be some issues there

Green Lantern... that's just not a very good colour

Aquaman... AquaVelvaman... maybe a cologne/after-shave tie in. Aqua's nice... but he's kind of wet

Superman and Batman are out because they are iconic - you don't rename Hollywood Boulevard for MLK - you choose a relative side street.

No sorry - it's got to be Cyborg. No-one cares

We're only allowed 10 options in a poll, and that would have meant CYBORG would have gone!

Because comic books aren't religious texts? Well, maybe to some people, but those aren't main-stream religions, for sure

Well, we can safely rule out Superman and Batman...

No way DC Comics is going to muck with those macho cash cow franchises...

(Though with Batman, you did have to wonder about that whole "Youthful ward, Dick Grayson"... thing....)

I would guess it's going to be a fairly minor character, that DC thinks they can milk publicity with by making this move....

Now if this were Marvel Comics, this would be a no brainer...

The Silver Surfer, obviously...

He's always been a moody, loner drama queen type... :D

I think I would guess Cyborg too...

No downside...

Though I have to say the idea of Yvonne Craig in her prime...

Image

Mixing it up with Lynda Carter in her prime....

Image

Does have a certain imaginative appeal.... 8-)

Wonder woman was an Amazon wouldn't she be gay or is that an improper term for a female?

Superman was married to Lois Lane he's out unless that marriage was a sham and he's out.

The rest would be mere speculation....

Wonderwoman.

Amazons don't need men; plus my theory is that the 'he' is a bluff and the safe bet is to out a lesbian because boys of all ages will still fantasize about doing her. Outing a male superhero would hurt profits due to male homophobia.

I don't think it would be Wonder Woman just because it would be too obvious and look a bit stereotypical. To a lesser degree, the same would be true of Batgirl. And Robin is also too obvious a choice for a gay man. It won't be Superman or Batman, they are simply too iconic.

My guess is that it will be one of the personas assumed by different people over the years, like Green Lantern, so that whoever newly assumes the identity will be gay/lesbian. In that way, they won't have to have a character explaining, none too convincingly, why it has taken him/her 70 years to get up the courage to come out of the closet.

Might be Wonder Woman. Hell, just look at most of the WW comics done by William Moulton Marston (as Charles Moulton). He created the character (based heavily on his wife) and most of the setting. (The last one he did was Wonder Woman #26.) Some of them were a little (hell, a lot) over the top.
