Nothing gets unanimous support. Every significant undertaking has people who will benefit and people who will, at least arguably, be inconvenienced or harmed. Propose a new factory that will employ thousands, and you will get environmentalists who try to stop it because it will pollute one thing or another, and people whose houses will have to be sold and razed to make room (many of whom will profit by making a stink).

Maybe this bridge will facilitate people driving right through Detroit but not stopping to buy anything (making Detroit less important/relevant). Maybe some neighborhoods will be bisected and roads turned to dead ends. Who knows?

Some people oppose everything and some people are so stupid or disinterested that they will SIGN anything.

When you get over 65% of the population supporting something, for all practical purposes you have "unanimous" support. Everyone who is not catatonically stupid, personally affected, or corrupt is supporting it. That's the best you can do.

I've travelled to Windsor on a few occasions for shopping, and never found the crossing to be overly burdensome. But then again I was not in a hurry or traveling at rush hour.

My posting was not about this particular bridge, but the difficulty in getting unanimous support for any major public undertaking.

I don't know enough about this bridge (from these two articles) to have any opinion on whether it is a good idea or not. I am certainly not criticizing anyone who opposes it (if the Michigan House does); anyone up there knows more about it than I do.

As opposed to where you live in Rhode Island -- the state that gave tens of millions to an inexperienced businessman, who then blew through that money, came begging for more, and now *you* get to pay the bill as the company folds. And funny how that businessman (like you) is a huge critic of government, yet loan was opposed by a democratic governor who refused to give the "businessman" the additional monies and/or guarantees and/or tax credits. Hmmmm, yes, that's reason reigning supreme. Oh, and that "businessman" fled from Massachusetts because we wouldn't give him as large a handout as you Rhodies).

There are very few places I'd rather live right now than Massachusetts. It isn't perfect, and it is expensive, but our population is well-educated, our economy is roaring back, our natural and cultural resources are unparallelled, and it is damn beautiful, even in 100 degree weather. Eventually I'll have a little place in Vermont as well, for escapes when I need mountains and dirt roads and a slower pace of life. But for now, life is very very good in the Bay State.
