Without U.S. markets, Canada would be about as prosperous as Greece. And the only reason it does not share many of the US's social ills is the long, cold winters, which have long discouraged emigration of a lot of our "problem children."

Canadians have long recognized that whatever facilitates increased trade should be supported. A lesson that many people in Michigan don't appear to have clued into yet, which is why we are fronting money for the bridge and why many of them continue to oppose it even if they don't have to pay for it.
And Canadian immigration, relative to its population, is far larger than that to the U.S. And contrary to what Dave might think, most of those immigrants are not coming from Arctic countries.
