My very first 'splurge' purchase on my new salary will be something I've wanted for almost 20 years - a REALLY good vacuum!

I want one that REALLY works on dog hair.

Suggestions? Dyson? Oreck? Miele?

Upright or canister?

I got our Dyson Ball for half price in my old job. So I gave away my five year old DC07 to my sister in law. They've had it for three years and it's still sucking strong.

Also the only cleaners that haven't committed suicide under the onslaught of a moulting Shetland Sheepdog.

we got a Dyson ball as well no problems with it other than the canister size but that's a problem with most on the other hand the ball is really handy on maneuvering.

God what a bunch of victims of crass commercialism. However, I was impressed with the completely misleading title, BSG.

IF you want a truly effective vacuum; I mean one that actually cleans more than the surface, get a clue, and do your due diligence.

Get a Kirby. If you can't handle that? Get A Filter Queen or a Hoover. All are far superior to Dyson in about every way. Gimmicks do Not clean.

And carpet is designed to Hide dirt. Dyson equipment is pretty and cleverly marketed. However, it will only give the illusion of clean and nothing more.

If you don't believe me? Call a respective salesman of either company, for a Free in home demo. Like I said, due diligence. First pull back a corner of the carpet to actually view the sand and grit that has accumulated under the padding. High traffic areas would be best.

And witness the results and the ineffectiveness of inferior cleaning equipment. (Dyson)

One may think that I have a dog in this debate. I don't. I just want to give good advice.

I have owned my own flooring business for 26 years and been a Journeyman Floor Coverer in the Local Union for more than 5 years.

Wow, Tim, that's a serious opinion. I have a Dyson and hardwood or ceramic file floors, a cat, and my own long blonde hair ( that i see in the canister more than the cat hair) and have had no issues.

BSG, might I suggest the better indulgence is a cleaning lady. Not only does it take an onerous chore off of your hands, it puts cash into the local economy, too. If you do want a Dyson vacuum, woot.com often has them available (which might just support Tim's position after all).

I honestly do not give a fuck about Name brands or type casting. A fact is a fact. I could quote some Latin here, however; let me just say "Let the buyer beware". And please, people need to educate themselves when making the third largest purchase -following Car payment and their Mortgage to make an informed decision.

Pet hair is indeed a problem. However, the Hair is not the total problem. Dander, as well as Dust Mites are problems which run deep and is Not cleaned by these machines.

My sister has a cleaning biz - houses and offices - and she swears by her Miele; that's a cool $650 for the cat/dog version. (My sister's was almost $900!)

I will probably treat myself to a cleaning gal 2x month, but I don't make enough mess for more than that (I clean as I go) and when it comes to two dogs and my OCD, vacuuming is an almost daily task. Good exercise!

I will look into the suggestions and welcome any others. In grad school my BF bought a Kirby from a friend of his who was selling them and it DID suck, hard - he did the in-home demo to show how much better it was than my cheapo Bissel.

I just want to be sure that if I spend $500+ on a vacuum, it's the best one possible.

We have had very good luck with our Oreck. It cost more, but it has an outstanding warranty and does the job very well.

But frankly I can't say how it would handle dog hair. Don't have a dog (or cat).

My elderly Hoover upright is still going strong...my grandmother bought it (a display model from, ahem, Woolworth's) in the mid-70's. It has now outlasted three replacements (I think her current vacuum is a Kirby), despite having to deal with one long-haired dog, one long-haired cat, and one very-long-haired woman.

I figure I have enough bags and belts to keep it running another 20 years of so.

Nothing really to do with mindless consumerism Tim.

After having our dog for twelve months and he had seen off two cleaners I needed one that was easy to take apart to remove his hair from and one that was small enough to store under the stairs. A Kirby is a magnificent cleaner, my aunt has one that's 20 years old and still going strong. But I don't have a garage to store it and all it's accessories in nor because of my hip and shoulder displasias do I fancy putting a joint out trying to get the damn thing up the stairs.

So I chose the best fit for my lifestyle. It just so happened to be a Dyson.
