Meet my new pal!
Re: Meet my new pal!
I am coming hard upon the joys of having an Aussie Shepard mix companion; it's 103 degrees here today and I just took seven huge handfuls of hair out of Little Bear's coat in one brushing. We've been averaging 2-3 handfuls daily - this is on top of the great big brushing she got last week at the Vet's. Not to mention the little blobs of hair that keep falling out all over the house.
I hope this isn't an all year round thing.
Can you tell my dogs have always been short haired?
She goes for surgery tomorrow. Say prayers for Little Bear!

Doggerel
A bear is a bear and a dog is a dog but what do you say when you put in a log that your Bear is a dog and your dog is a Bear? and another's called Cougar and sits in a chair? (this dissertation is going nowhere)
Bear is long-haired, woolly and white the cats took off in a terrible fright but now that they realise he won't bite they sleep near his side by day and by night each one imagines he's theirs by right
"Oh" (says Bear), "I don't care but I wish they'd go. I really don't like to be crowded so. I really ought to be living in snow. Let's go there now let's go, let's go from the temperature high to where it's low anywhere, anywhere, I don't know I should be the dog of an Eskimo".
Two other dogs adorn this place lean and graceful and long in the face they bound and jump and love to race poor old Bear can only chase when they decide to set the pace
"Oh" (says Bear), "I don't care but I must be fair - I can't compare in this affair - but with heart to spare and plenty of soul - within this lair I have a role (apart from cleaning my feeding bowl)"
Bear sits here, lies there, Bear's hair is everywhere - on every table, every chair it floats upon water, it flies in the air "Oh" says Bear, "I don't care, (it must be nice to fly in the air!)
but in the window at Gleebooks fair I clearly witnessed upon the rack there a book on How to Knit with Doghair So though you may wonder, perhaps even scoff my owner will look like a wonderful toff dressed in the fur of a woolly old Bear she'll go to the opera - she'll go anywhere!"

Gob, I guess it's true then that life gives you challenges to work out your flaws. I'm meant to let go of my OCD - or, to get that very nice vacuum.

Give her a hair cut...
Sometimes it seems as though one has to cross the line just to figger out where it is

That would be weird.
Anyway, vet says her shed should get less voluminous once her stress & nutrition are normalized. Not to mention we are in a heat wave.
Tonight she's doped up following surgery, which went well. Vet says her leg was pretty messed up inside and part of her femur had to be removed - but the repair went well and she should be on the mend soon.

My old neighbor had a husky, which got clipped in the summer. All but his tail...so you had a dog with what amounted to a crewcut, but with a tail that looked like it could be used to clean out a 6" pipe.

Re: Meet my new pal!
I know lots of dogs, who get a summer cut. It helps in keeping any flea infestation down, too.

See? not so wierd.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. I know the anesthesia can be tough on them, not to mention post surgery pain when it wears off.
Re: Meet my new pal!
If she's a heeler she's too short haired to make a clip worthwhile.

Our Millie has to be clipped, Barnum doesn't, he just sheds by the shedload.

I love that picture, with Millie's little sneer.

Little Bear's got one weeks' of antibiotic and three weeks' of pain meds, so hopefully she will not be too uncomfortable. She was flying high when I picked her up from the hospital, between pain meds and leftover anesthetic.
She's got such a mellow personality to begin with - I can't get over it, in such a young dog. Jenny is so high energy; this is a nice balance. Yin/yang.

They do get along, very well. It's as if Jenny can sense the imperative, which is interesting to me, because I have done a lot of dogsitting this past year so Jenny has had lots of dogs around but always seemed to know they were just guests. It's like she knew immediately - as I did - that this one was joining the pack.
It's great that Little Bear is very mellow, and accepted immediately that she was #2 dog (in terms of dominance). I can't wait until she's healed, because I've already seen them occasionally crouching in play position, and I know when LB's 100% there will be some fun to be had! Little Bear also kisses Jenny, which is cute - and the past few days she started 'talking' to me like Jenny does when she wants something (my dogs try to boss me!).
I'm glad the universe brought her to us.

In the same way you don't clip an German Shepard, you don't clip this kind.
Best of luck BSG.
You have done Bear proud. if you want to get and Aussie bent to the name, she should be called Little Rad Bear, because she's blue.r
