Re: killing cougar?
I'm guessing that the legislature of Idaho has determined that due to the predatory behavior of mountain lions it is acceptable to take them as prey. If they believed that the species was valuable in some way then they would have outlawed hunting them.
Humans consume all sorts of resources "just for fun." So what? We own this planet, and rightly so.

Re: killing cougar?
Cougars are not threatened, they are over-populated in California and are attacking and killing increasing numbers of people and pets as they move into more populated areas.
Hunting is an effective means of keeping their numbers sustainable. We should not have made hunting them illegal in Calif. after their population had rebounded to several thousand in the 1980s.
Hunting cougars is a practical question in wildlife management. It is a moral question to the extent that if you do not reduce their numbers with hunting you have to admit that your actions will kill a certain number of people every decade. In other words you have to admit that you are valuing cougars more than human lives.

Accepting a several thousand-dollar hunting trip from parties with an interest in his area of government was a corrupt act and he should have been fired for it even though he did pay up after he was caught.

Re: killing cougar?
I agree me mate no animal should be hunted to the point of extinction. And I agree that the southern panther (cougar to you Yankees) is a beautiful animal but I don’t see why the deer should be disked just because it is an herbivore. To me the deer is just as pretty as the panther. But that has never been a barrier to deer hunting for me. When it comes to a conflict between humans and wild life it is our responsibility take the side our fellow humans. Sorry but if I had to decide between the existence of the spotted owl and the jobs of loggers or between a salamander and continued food production in southern California I will come will come down on the side of the humans. Sometimes one has to decide on what is more important. When the panther population is to the point that they are hungry and have no fear of humans they will attack people. I have never hunted a predator myself but I see nothing wrong with keeping their numbers in check by regulated hunting.Gob wrote:That was then, this is now. Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

Re: killing cougar?
We are the ones that have encroached on the animals territories forcing them to find food in populated areas. If you are on mountain trails , etc. then I believe you are fair game. Unfortunately animals have had to adapt to our presence and resulted in the wildlife becoming desensitized to humans. Now there is an increase of incidents and the assumption that the animal has gone rogue with the sole intention of attacking humans. I don't think we are that tasty. If you corner any wild animal they are going to defend themselves.
Re: killing cougar?
When a panther starts to show his ribs they tend to become less choosy and lower their culinary standards. The scary thing about this cat, according the old people, is that it is capable living in your backyard without you ever knowing it. So if one lives in a rural area and the dog acts odd you might want to be suspicious. But you live In Australia so I don’t think you have anything to worry about.PMS Princess wrote:. Cougars are being found (and shot) in Berkeley and Palo Alto neighborhoods which have existed for more than 100 years and have begun preying on hikers and joggers using trails in use for > 50 years. They are over-populated and need to be culled.
