Canberra: city of animal lovers

Image

SELF-DESCRIBED protector of animals Nora Preston sends out a media release.

It is about a dog she alleges is being mistreated. It sits on the owner's verandah and she has taken photos of it and sent them to her mailing list.

''The dog still has not been seized and is still out there in the freezing day and night with no kennel,'' she writes.

So I ask her how much trouble she has been in, doing this sort of community activism.

''They abuse you,'' she says matter-of-factly, but does not want to say too much more about it.

She only adds: ''When I do that, I'm not on my own. We try to calm them down and just explain to them what they need to do to avoid legal action. Sometimes it takes months.''

Canberra has its fair share of animal lovers.

A small number of them take their animal enthusiasm to the next level, campaigning in the media and sometimes trying as hard as they can to remain anonymous as they break the law.

However, Preston says she does not endorse law breaking, such as trespass. It would only hurt her ability to get things done the right way, she says, through lobbying.

She does not approve of the damaging of private property. She is more of a supporter of the media campaign, despite the dirty looks she might get from pet owners.

She has no qualms about stepping in and calling the authorities on short notice.
When she saw a man displaying cockatoo wings on the dashboard of his car, she called the police.

''I could just imagine him ripping [the wings] off a live cockatoo,'' she says (although there is no proof the man did this).

She also stepped in when she saw a cockatoo being ''stomped on'' at Queanbeyan in April. ''That cockatoo is still being rehabilitated, it's been on antibiotics.''

The bird is now with one of the 20 volunteers in her Wildlife Carers Group.
Preston, the owner of two cats and one dog, started bird watching in the 1970s. After joining the local Wildlife Foundation in the 1980s, she later founded her own organisation, which she says is funded from her own pocket and receives up to 10 calls a day regarding animal welfare matters.

The group doesn't give names to animals it rescues, although Preston is not against the practice.

The focus is on healing the animals' wounds until they are released rather than handling them. ''We don't want to turn them into pets,'' she says.

Each year Preston says her organisation receives dozens of calls about snakes in backyards, echidnas on the road and possums in the roof.
A person must be patient to remove a possum from a house.

''They are very territorial,'' she says. A possum box must be added to the roof, so the possum can mark it with its smells. When this is done, the box can be put in a nearby tree and the entry into the roof blocked.

Occasionally when her volunteers are called out to possum jobs, the noises in the roof turn out to be rats and mice.

''We don't deal with those,'' she says. ''People have to call the pest controllers.''
If echidnas are picked up from the road they should be placed off the bitumen in the direction they are travelling in. Otherwise, they may become disoriented from where their young, known as puggles, are located.

So how much animal cruelty, whether deliberate or through ignorance, exists in the ACT?

Figures show that the territory's RSPCA animal welfare inspectors responded to 1100 complaints in the past year. Further action only needed to be taken in less than three per cent of those cases, according to the RSPCA chief executive Michael Linke.

In the past year, six animals in the ACT have been so neglected they have been seized immediately.

Some of the worst cases end up in court.

Clearly Preston believes her Wildlife Carers Group has an important part to play in tending to the animals that the RSPCA and other organisations do not get to.

Wildlife carer could faces charges after sick native birds seized

Police, conservation officers and the RSPCA raided the home of a self-styled wildlife warrior yesterday, seizing seven native birds in poor health.

Authorities raided the home on Drysdale Circuit in Kambah before midday yesterday, finding four sulphur crested cockatoos, one king parrot, one eastern rosella and one wood duck.

The home belongs to Nora Preston, founding president of the Wildlife Carers Group.

The group describes itself as a wildlife rehabilitation service and has been operating since 2004.

The birds were taken for treatment and examination by vets at the RSPCA, according to chief executive officer Michael Linke.

Ms Preston could now face charges of animal cruelty, attracting a maximum of two years' jail and $20,000 worth of fines, and holding native animals without a licence.

''The animals were in bad condition, they'll continue to receive treatment here and we'll continue to assist the government with their inquiries,'' Mr Linke said.

Territory and Municipal Services said in a statement that the animals were undergoing health checks to ensure they could be released back into the wild.

The directorate said sick or injured native animals were only allowed to be held without a licence for a maximum period of 48 hours. The RSPCA is the only organisation licensed to rehabilitate native wildlife. But Ms Preston said she did have a licence, claiming she was the victim of ''vicious harassment'' and had only kept the seven birds for a period of 24 hours.

She described the RSPCA's claim that the birds were in poor health as a lie.

Mr Linke said it was uncommon for Canberrans to keep native animals in their homes ''because of the specialist nature of the care''.

''This is why the government has strict rules in place about caring for wild animals, because it is a specialist skill and you need the appropriate training and appropriate licences to make sure you can do it properly.''

My old Directorate had serious concerns about the activities this woman had been up to ever since she refused to comply with her licence to rescue and rehabilitate animals which was subsequently cancelled some years ago. imagine their surprise when she was given media time and got a bit carried away with the whole situation and confessed to breaking the law.

Vanity.
Bah!

In my country, they're called hoarders; with the most common ones being 'Cat Ladies'. Our local shelters and PetSmart Charities® have banded together to support the rescue workload when one of these hoarders is broken up, so that the confiscated animals have a good chance of finding loving forever homes.

Emergency Relief Waggin'® Vehicle Deployed to North Florida

More Than 650 Cats Seized from a Cat Sanctuary
PHOENIX (June 8, 2011) —
PetSmart Charities® has dispatched one of its Emergency Relief Waggin' vehicles to the scene of the largest all-cat rescue in PetSmart Charities' history. More than 650 cats were seized from a cat sanctuary in Alachua County, Florida, near Gainesville. The criminal investigation will now focus on animal neglect and cruelty.

The 53-foot Emergency Relief Waggin’ vehicle was stocked with 16-tons of cargo worth $80,000, and was dispatched from DC36 in Ottawa, Illinois. The vehicle contained critical supplies, including pet food, wire crates, plastic carriers, bowls, collars, fans, generators, battery chargers and lights to aid the animal rescuers on scene.

About PetSmart Charities®

Established in 1994, PetSmart Charities, Inc. is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that creates and supports programs that save the lives of homeless pets, raise awareness of companion animal welfare issues and promote healthy relationships between people and pets. The largest funder of animal-welfare efforts in North America, PetSmart Charities has provided more than $165 million in grants and programs benefiting animal-welfare organizations and has helped save the lives of nearly 5 million pets through its in-store adoption program. They are really, really cute babies, rubato, but they look more like baby hedgehogs, not echidnas.
The baby echidnas are called puggles, and they're bald to start with and I wouldn't call them overly 'cute':

but they get cuter as they grow!!

Thanks (belatedly) :)

My youngest son (the one who went overseas doing the turtle conservation thing) is doing some work at a wildlife park - I'm becoming quite the 'expert' on native Australian animals (just through listening to him enthusiastically telling me about his work days)!! :D

I'm having a busy life at the moment - still lurking when I can though

(and hugs back to you oldr)

I'll look forward to it (I wasn't sure who owed who - I'll let you wear it!!)
I don't feel like I've been much actual support lately, but the thoughts have always been there.

One of the (many, many) things that has been occupying me is that my youngest son - the wildlife /conservationist one, has been handrearing an orphan joey. One of the 'perks' of working for a wildlife park!!
I've been sort of helping - although he's very capable himself, and of course is getting lots of support from the wildlife park. But I've still been able to help :-)
It started as 2 hourly feeds so it was a bit chaotic for a while, but is now down to about four hourly most times, and at night she now seems to have a six hour sleep, so it's now getting to be into a good routine and much 'easier'!
We've got a very full household of animals at the moment (very, very full) but the joey has been like having a newborn baby in the house - very constant. My son will look after her for about the next year, but of course he'll have her at work with him and she'll gradually be added in with the park 'roos.

Here's a picture of the joey (taken yesterday):

No - she's just 'on loan'!!
She's still the 'property' (so to speak) of the wildlife park - because of that we are very lucky in that they reimburse my son for the costs of the feed, bottles, teats, and all the other associated items needed for her care.
Most of the park employees do this at times - only for the orphaned animals that need 24 hour care. The park gets the benefit of the additional 'free labour' for the out of hours care and of course the people who work there love animals and are happy to help out.
My son plays 'mummy roo' for about a year, and gets to name her, but the 'roo will eventually become one of the park 'roos. After that he'll still see her and still be able to interact with her, sometimes, on the days he will be at work, and in around his job. So it's a bit different to releasing them into the wild in that respect. But still good to know that she'll end up with her own kind (But still a little bit of a happy/sad experience for my son when she 'leaves home'!!) :-)

She's already gone through a couple of name changes and will no doubt go through a couple more.
She was just recently Lucy and then Lulu and is currently Lilly - but she doesn't register that she has a name at the moment so he is just playing around with names until he finds one that he thinks is 'her'. It'll become her name at the park, so he wants it to be "just right'!!

Later when she grows a bit I'll put up a couple more pictures if you like, and I'll let you know then what she'll be called. :)

I am so glad that these are for life in a park Alice.

I always get worried about joeys imprinting too strongly with humans and ending in trouble should a release be attempted.

I am also concerned about what is provided as diet by people who are "well-meaning".

We've got a very full household of animals at the moment (very, very full)
And that's different ..... how? :ok
You have always had a house full of animals.

Right now we are down to the dog (Black lab named Apollo) and a turtle (red eared slider named Red).
We did find 10 caterpillars on the parsley plant. I looked them up and found out they were black swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. So we let them devour the parsley plant but after having 10, only one completed it's journey into butterfly-dom. (we missed it emerging from it's cucoon) Looks like three were eaten, four just died and two went into cucoons of which only one emerged (one just disappeared). The other one that went to cucoon, set up his site so that it was hanging upside down. According to the info I read their head needs to be mostly upright while changing. One out of ten, I guess that's not too bad. Plus the parsely plant is regrowing. Maybe it's not too late for a second round butterfly hopefulls. I am keeping an eye out for eggs laid on the leaves now that I know what they look like.

Dog rescue founder who purchased Vick property charged with animal cruelty

In a shocking announcement today, Tamira Thayne, the founder of Dogs Deserve Better, has been charged with animal cruelty by Surry County authorities.

Dogs Deserve Better was spotlighted last year when Tamira purchased Michael Vick’s former Bad Newz Kennels property in Virginia. Vick ran his infamous dogfighting operation from the location and over 66 dogs were later rescued.

The property now operates as one of the rescue's sanctuaries for dogs who have been chained or penned up.

Surry County Animal Control indicated they had received multiple complaints in July relating to the treatment of dogs at the kennel. Officers from Virginia's Office of Veterinary Services visited the property. As result of the visit, Surry County Animal Control filed charges on Friday that allege inadequate care and cruelty at the facility. However, authorities have not yet released any specifics as to what led to the charges.

Chief Animal Control Officer Tracy Terry did verify is that the sanctuary had not been operating with state approval, saying that there were outstanding items that needed to be addressed.

Tamira Thayne was reached by Associated Press after news broke and spoke with her in a telephone interview. She said she read of the charges in a newspaper report but said that she had not spoken to authorities and had not yet been served warrants.

She told Associated Press, "I know nothing about it. I just got home from my honeymoon in St. Lucia. Apparently I was abusing dogs while I was gone." She further added, "We take special pains to make sure our dogs are safe and happy. They have a great life here...Somebody needs to tell me what the hell is going on here.''

She noted in her interview that to the best of her knowledge all points regarding state approval had been addressed and rectified with the government.

Tamira said there are currently nine dogs at the sanctuary including her personal dog.

A hearing is set for next month on September 25.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update August 28, 2012

Details are slow to emerge regarding yesterday's news of charges laid by Surry County Animal Control towards Tamira Thayne. Neither party are revealing the nature of the charges at this time. The few details that have come forward since yesterday's news are:
•Tamira has been served. She is charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty and one count of inadequate care of animals, also a misdemeanor.
•Search warrants were filed in Surry Circuit Court on Tuesday. Deputies searched the property and took away two boxes of paperwork. They also seized a Taser and several cans of mace that were allegedly used on the dogs. WTVR reports that the mace cans were found in several locations including a closet and drawers of the kitchen. Investigators also found an invoice for the purchase of the mace.
•A Pit bull named Jada was also taken by Animal Control from the property.
•WTVR CBS6 was on hand as the search of the property was underway and did a news report which has video footage of the facilities and shows Jada being taken to animal control's truck.
•Surry County Chief Animal Control Officer Tracy Terry said she began investigating on July 20 after having received mailed complaints including photographs from current and former employees and volunteers about how the dogs at the kennel were kept.
•The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services also inspected the property last Thursday and said their investigation is ongoing.

As new details emerge, I'll continue to post updates here.

LoCa, I followed the link and read the comments and then also followed the link in one of the comments to the site put up by former employees...

There should be a special place in hell for a person like this. I really hope she does some time measured in years. Maybe in addition to the animal cruelty charges they can nail her for fraud, and I'll bet they find more charges to add if they go through her books with a fine tooth comb...I hope they throw the book at this Cruella DeVille....

To think of these poor animals finding themselves abused and neglected all their lives only to be taken out of that environment and put in this bitch's clutches....

It's sickening....
