Walmart, according to sec.com you made $378,799,000,000 in annual revenue in 2009.

today while at the Ooltewah, TN location myself & the person behind me let a uniformed soldier in front of us in line. the other woman only had eggs, i only had about 4 items & the soldier had a completely full cart. after waiting in line a few minutes & the three of us making small talk, he told us about his FIVE children, how much he loved his, as he said, 'god-send' of a wife, & his TWO tours in COMBAT in Iraq.

by the time the cashier was done ringing up his items, his total was about $180. i look at him & he was clearly embarrassed & upset. he said to the cashier 'ma'am, i'm so sorry but i'll have to put some of these things back. i only have about $100 on my EBT card.' your employee ROLLS HER EYES AT HIM, & says 'how did you over-estimate $80!?' his face turned bright red.

number one, i find it shameful that a man who is a complete stranger to all of us, yet is
willing to DIE for us, is on government assistance, but that's a completely different argument. but the fact that your employee was so incredibly rude is disgusting.

so before she could make herself look like even more of soul-less human being, i spoke up. i explained i only had seventy dollars on me but i was willing to put my items back & give him everything i had so he could FEED HIS FAMILY. the woman behind me offered the cover the rest & my groceries as well just so he didn't have to put anything back, be put through anymore embarrassment, or take any clearly much-needed money off his EBT card. i have worked in a grocery store myself, i understand there are people who abuse EBT cards & take advantage. but this man is willing to DIE FOR YOU. i paid $70 for some make-up & a tooth-brush. the other woman paid over $110 dollars for a carton of eggs. i have never been so angry or upset in my life. the soldier begged over & over to write us both checks, which we refused. we also offered to help him take his groceries to his truck because not one person on your staff did. THIS IS DISGRACEFUL.

i will not be returning to that locating, & i will be calling your corporate office. think twice about the people who you hire, because i guarantee you have lost three customers today with your terrible display of pure inhumanity.

If the above account is true (I have no reason to believe it is not). Would not it be wonderful if every servicemember boycotted MalWart and hit these greedy sonsofabitches right in their money-swollen gonads?

Why Americans continure to patronize these bastards is beyond me. To save a lousy dollar or two. False economy as the Walton Klan continues to fornicate all over the American landscape, selling all of us short. And you dumbfcuks let them do it to you to save a few measly pennies?

I'll play devil's advocate for a little bit and say it could just be one very shitty employee.

Taking that hat off now, that employee represents Wal-Mart as far as the public is concerned. The managers should be doing a much better job screening people who work there so we don't have incidents like this.

Walmart has more than a million employees in the US alone...

Any organization, with that many employees, even one that was doing the most scrupulous screening job imaginable, is going to have a few ill mannered oafs slip through....

Lord knows the government employee hiring systems (state, federal, and local) sure do....

Whether or not this story is true.....
Just to take the side of the employee, the low level cashier, probably making minimum wage, and having scanned through more than a few people trying to get over on the food stamp program and awaiting handouts from Walmart (personally I avoid walmart and any "box store" as much as possible). While his/her tact may have been better, an over run by $80 is a lot to have missed during a "guesstimation" while shopping, they probably did not have the power to "wave" the cost of the entire food cart let alone the $80 he didn't have. That cashier would most likely been fired had they tried. A call to the manager might have been in order but the people around one of the bravest of our warriors took care of the situation as I would have done had I been in line with him.

And to answer the question:

Why Americans continure to patronize these bastards is beyond me. To save a lousy dollar or two.

As I have said before, I avoid buying from Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowes as much as possible. But when people are on food stamps and trying to make every dollar count, sometimes it is unavoidable. I commend those people around the service man who stepped up and covered his costs. Avoiding the "Made In China" label has become almost a full time job. I remember a time when the only contents in a carton that was labeled "Made In China" were fireworks.

I don't shop there, and never will. I get that its cheap, and people with fewer resources need to stretch their dollars, but who needs all that poorly made plastic crap. No thank you.

A company that I used to always buy their products was Stanley (based in Connecticut IIRC). I would always make sure I got Stanley made decorative hinges and clasps when making jewelry boxes and the like. Home Depot stopped carrying much of their products and replaced them with some unknown brand the was made in China so I searched out where I could get the Stanley made ones. Found some in the local hardware store and looked at the packages and much to my dismay even Stanley's parts were made in China.

I ended up buying what I needed but have to say that the Stanley, Made In China parts have not held their finish even half as long as Stanley's parts that I purchased when they were made in the USA.
and yes I did send Stanley a nasty-gram about the parts

Wal-Mart provides a valuable public service by brilliantly consolidating its massive purchasing power to provide exceptional value for the consumer dollar. They get the best prices from their vendors, and have the lowest markup in retailing. A large family can easily save a couple thousand AFTER TAX DOLLARS a year by buying everything that is available from WM, from WM, rather than anyplace else.

As for the quality of their merchandise, it is appropriate for their market segment. One could pay three times as much for a pair of trousers at Macy's, and the trousers would be a bit better made - but not three times better. Both are made in some god-forsaken shit-hole, and Macy's retail markup is twice as high as WM. Is that what you want to pay for?

As a general proposition, WM treats its retail employees at least as well, but generally better, than any other mass market retailer. Sears used to be better, but guess what? They are essentialy out of business and doing their best to emulate WM's success. And believe it or not, EVERY FUCKING WM EMPLOYEE is working at WM because that is the best option they have. They could work, I suppose, at a retail store where the clerks are members of the SEIU, but...oops...that store either doesn't exist anymore or it never did exist.

To badmouth WM because their employees don't have the pay and perks of Government Motors is pure idiocy (which is why it's not so surprising here). They are a fucking RETAILER!

I personally buy all my detergent, patent medicines, vitamins, cereal, work clothes and gloves, tennis balls, name-brand paper products, and snacks at Sam's Club. I have purchased cameras, an apartment refrigerator, office furniture, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and a large-screen television. I have gotten more than my money's worth in every single case. The few complaints I've had were taken care of cheerfully and immediately.

The money that I've saved was available for hundreds of other purposes, including saving for retirement. Understanding the value of WalMart is kind of an economic litmus test, actually. Many people flunk, but I think the American public gets it, even if most Libs are in the dark.

There is an election every day of the year to decide which retailer provides the greatest benefit to the American Consumer, and guess what? WalMart wins! Every day. And the stock market kinda likes them, too.

Not my opinion, just the facts.

Wal-Mart sells the exact same clothing that other stores charge twice as much for. They sell the exact same groceries as a typical supermarket. They sell the exact same oil and filter that costs half again as much at NAPA. The beer they sell is exactly the same as the stuff the local package store charges more for. I only with they had self-checkouts.

I try and buy my stuff at the local stores which are owned by local people. The hardware store I frequented (and never failed to have what I needed) went out but thankfully there is another not too far away. And you didn't have to buy 5 of the prepackaged widgets, the owner would look at what you needed and out from some mystery drawer he would pull the exact widget and say that will be 25 cents.

Appliances I always buy at PC Richards which has withstood the onslaught of The Wiz and Best Buy and others. PC Richards has been primarily a Long Island company (family owned and operated) and thier stuff has always perfect.

The only thing I have consistently bought at Walmart are my polarized sun glasses. They have a style I like and have not found them anywhere else.
