Re: Caught A Little Of the Demo Convention Yesterday...
They didn't 'boo God', they booed the silly voting process. And nobody is secretly longing for the Soviet Union.
Also, the Republicans are pretty emphatic about wanting to tear down welfare programs.

I plan to go into a little more detail about the major screw up the Dems dodged when they didn't wind up in a floor fight on national television over whether or not to kick God out of their platform...(In a country where poll after poll shows that 90% of the adult population believes in God, and in an election where one of the foundational arguments the Dems want to make against the GOP is that they are "out of touch" or "too extreme" for the average American...that would have been a PR disaster of monumental proportions...

But this evening I thought I would make a point that I assume we can all agree on....Conservative or Liberal, Republican or Democrat...
The best moment in either convention, was when Gabby Giffords stood up to lead the crowd in The Pledge Of Allegiance ...
With the enormously difficult road she has traveled, what a courageous, remarkable, and inspiring person she is...

Scenes we would like to but will never see...
Republican/Democrat Presidential candidate says - "Vote for me and I will do everything within my power to improve our economy and do everything it takes to help our country recover from the many problems we've experienced within the last few years.
And... if you disagree with my plan and I am not elected, I will do everything within my power to exchange ideas and work with the elected President and his party and do everything possible to help our country's economy and world standing improve.
After all, the most important issue is not which party is in power, it is how to be more productive and to put our political differences aside and work together to solve problems and ultimately do what is best for We, the People of the United States of America."

Perhaps unlike you I remember the Cold War. How many cold warriors of the Democratic Party that was prominent and active after 1968 can you name? I will give you Scoop Jackson and Charley Wilson. But on the Republican side just off the top of my head I can name Goldwater, Reagan, Bush, Ford, Cheany .Joe Guy wrote:That's a thought I'd expect from someone like CSB's 'Chicken Steve'.liberty wrote:They booed God and secretly longed for the Soviet Union.

The Democrat party will always be suspect on national security because of their actions in the Cold War. Do you remember that the term cold warrior was a derisive term used by democrats to refer to people who resisted the Soviets? Do you remember the proposal of foreign aid for the Soviet Union? Do you remember, “Better red than dead”?
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

I just turned on Fox News and watched Sean Hannity and Sarah Palin talking about the Democratic Convention.

Re: Caught A Little Of the Demo Convention Yesterday...
Lib is over the top in his characterizations, but the attempt to ridicule Romney over his view of the Russians is also misplaced...
Romney may have made the point in-artfully, (as he frequently does) but to ridicule him for being stuck in "Cold War Era Thinking", only indicates that Obama and Co. seem to be stuck in "Boris Yeltsin Era Early 1990's Thinking"..
In case Team Obama hasn't noticed, Russia, under Vladimir "the worst disaster of the 20th Century was the collapse of the Soviet Union " Putin, has compiled a record both externally (just ask the Georgians) and internally that does indeed represent a serious threat to the US and the West....
And for the President to make light of this, (as he did in his re-nomination acceptance speech) is troubling...it suggests he doesn't understand the threat Putin's regime poses ...
At every point of the compass, Putin's agenda exists in an antagonistic juxtaposition with both our national interests, and our values, and those of our allies....
Whatever else it is, the Russian Regime under Putin is certainly not our "friend" or our "partner"...
Lord knows Mitt Romney is vulnerable from a thousand different points, but to attack him on that one seemed really wrong headed to me.
I don't think this will hurt Obama (or help him much) politically, because I suspect the average American hasn't been paying a whole lot of attention to what the Russian regime has been evolving into over the past decade, and it won't register much on the radar screen as an election issue...Baring some huge international crisis between now and Election Day, this election is going to be about the economy...
But as someone who does pay attention to this sort of thing, I personally found Obama's cavalier and mocking attitude about the threat posed by Putin's Russia disturbing..,

Vladimir Putin seems like a bored supervillain who's one fluffy white cat away from world domination.
Re: Caught A Little Of the Demo Convention Yesterday...
Perhaps the first thing you should learn is that anything you believe you "remember" is wrong. You "remembered" that Canada was allied with the Soviet Union during the Vietnam War. Enough said.liberty wrote:Perhaps unlike you I remember the Cold War.
You name presidents, vice-presidents and one presidential candidate. Considering that Republicans occupied the White House for 20 of the 24 years from 1968 to the fall of the Soviet Union, it is hardly surprising that Republican names would dominate that list. How many cold warriors of the Democratic Party that was prominent and active after 1968 can you name? Nevertheless, people seemed to forget that there were reasons for the high level of tension between East and West during the late 1970s, which had to do with the Carter administration pushing the envelope on a number of fronts - demanding greater human rights in the Eastern Bloc, giving open support to dissidents, boosting the signal of Radio Free Europe, openly encouraging a revolution in Poland, funding the Afghan resistance against the Soviet invasion, and creating the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force in order to back up the Carter Doctrine, which declared the Persian Gulf region to be an area of strategic U.S. interest where any invasion would be repelled with all necessary force.
I guess you didn't "remember" any of that.
No, because that is not how the term was used. Cold Warrior referred to any political leader, on any side, who had a hand in shaping and executing policy during the Cold War.Do you remember that the term cold warrior was a derisive term used by democrats to refer to people who resisted the Soviets?
Would that be the aid proposed by President Bush (I)? You know, the Republican?Do you remember the proposal of foreign aid for the Soviet Union?
No,because the phrase was "better dead than red". Idiot.remember, “Better red than dead”?

Re: Caught A Little Of the Demo Convention Yesterday...
Well Strop, if you don't see a Thugocracy with several thousand nuclear tipped ICBM's (as opposed to the 20,000 it used to have...thank you Mr. Reagan) and enormous resources, attempting to re-assert itself as a global and regional bully boy by supporting other thugocracies with it's resources, as antithetical to the best interests of The West....
We're just going to have to agree to disagree...
ETA:
BTW, let me go on the record now as saying that when George W. Bush said that he thought he could trust this cold-blooded ex-KGB thug because he "looked into his eyes" I criticized it at the time; and I will make no excuses for that Neville Chamberlain like, "I got the impression I could trust him" statement either.

Re: Caught A Little Of the Demo Convention Yesterday...
It's not one of my concerns Jim. I prefer not to live under the shadow of potential threats from nations who can barely feed themselves. I'll leave that to the Americans.

Vladimir Putin reminds me a lot of Michael Corleone....
A second generation Mafia boss who tries to put forward a more "modern" public face than the old time Dons, but who's in the same business, and whose opponents have a remarkable propensity for turning up dead....

Re: Caught A Little Of the Demo Convention Yesterday...
In fairness, it is often when nations can barely feed themselves that they choose to engage in aggressive expansionist policies.
That being said, calling Russia the U.S.'s "number one geopolitical foe" is more than a little over the top. There are much smaller nations that pose far greater threats to U.S. interests.

What so-called "war" spawned the dueling slogans "Better Dead Than RED" and "Better Red Than Dead" in the 1950

Both slogans were used depending on which side one was on, I was on the side of freedom; which side was Scooter on?

I keep telling you that whatever you believe you "remember", you can be sure it is wrong, but no, you keep sticking your foot in it.
What a buffoon.
If you're going to plagiarize a question asked in Yahoo! Answers you should at least do some checking to see if they know what they are talking about (which they didn't, in this case)."Better dead than Red" was an anti-Communist phrase, possibly first used during World War II (in German as "Lieber tot als rot") and later during the Cold War by the United States. It was possibly coined by Nazi Germany's propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, in the end phase of the Second World War to motivate the German military and population to fight the Soviet Red Army to the end. The English version may have come from the original German, but it could also be a re-invention. The slogan was used in the United States in the 1950s by anti-Communists to express their opposition of Communism and left-wing politics (see McCarthyism).
What a buffoon.
