Well done FBI!

Post by Gob »

An 18-year-old man had been arrested in the US city of Chicago on suspicion of plotting a bomb attack.

The FBI said Adel Daoud had planned to detonate a car bomb outside a bar in the city.

He had been tracked by the FBI after posting comments online about violent jihad and the killing of Americans, the Associated Press reports.

He was arrested on Friday in a sting operation, where agents posing as extremists gave him a phoney bomb.

Officials said the bomb was inert and that the public was never in danger.

Mr Daoud has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage and destroy a building with an explosive, AP reports.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in jail.

US law enforcement officials have increasingly carried out "sting" operations in an effort to stop potential terror suspects.

There has been a number of convictions based on stings in recent years, but Muslim groups and civil rights groups have expressed concern at the use of such tactics.

Because if the police didn't set up these stings, they wouldn't get caught, and then could blow themselves to bits and earn 72 virgins!

A better way of stopping them, would be to show them what a real virgin looks like....

Because they are concerned that the FBI is crossing the line from investigation into entrapment. There have been a few of these cases when individuals with no apparent connections to terrorism or any past history suggesting any propensity to violence have magically become would-be suicide bombers after making the acquaintance of FBI agents and/or informants. Here was one such case we discussed previously.

Note to self: when new friends suggest sticking up the local ABSA and stealing all their cash, think carefully.

Yeah, I have to say that if someone came up to me and suggested that I become a suicide bomber, personally I think I could probably resist the impulse, even as attractive as the idea sounds....

The fact that so many people get lured into cults and become convinced to do things that would have been completely out of character otherwise, says that not everyone is as strong-willed as you are, Jim. And laws against entrapment didn't come into being out of thin air; at some point we as a society recognized that people could be induced into criminal activity that they otherwise had no propensity to commit, and we refused to countenance police doing that.

The entrapment issue is well-taken. However there is still a very useful element of public education by publishing this kind of story. It might disrupt the real recruitment of conspirators if they see the penalty and are reminded that it is difficult to know if the person they are talking with is a 'real' Jihadi or FBI.

It is worth noting that in some of these cases, the FBI is alerted to the potential perpetrators by family or other Muslims who are disturbed by the perpetrators words and actions. In the Portland case, the perp actively sought out the FBI plants, they gave him many opportunities to back out, but he went ahead and pressed the faux-ignition trigger with every intention of killing hundreds. In that case, it appears the FBI stayed safely away from entrapment. It would be disappointing if the FBI was not well-trained in this regard and allowed a violent terrorist to escape justice.
