You're completely wrong that baseball is a parochial sport. Have you not paid attention to the legions of players from South and Central America and the Carribbean, where baseball is the most popular sport. Or Japan, where baseball players are gods?

And then of course there is the World Baseball Classic, which includes 28 teams from, well, lets see:

Australia
Brazil
Canada
China
Colombia
Spain
France
Great Britain
Germany
Israel
Japan
Korea
Mexico
Netherlands
Panama
The Republic of South Africa
Thailand
USA
Venezuela

Oh, and the tournament is being played in: Florida, Germany, Panama, Taiwan, Arizona, and California.

Would you like to look up the definition of parochial, perhaps?

The second most popular sport in the world after football.
Was the question and answer I believe?

Now let's not let the retard divert attention from the OP due to his childish inability to accept that anything he likes cannot be; "The bestestest ever in the whole worlds cos I like it nyah nyah!!"

(Some of us still remember when, in a vain attempt to prove it was otherwise he made the lunatic claim that 1:6 of the world's population play volleyball!)

Now, back to the OP, and the important stuff....
Shane Watson starred as Australia beat Ireland by seven wickets in the opening World Twenty20 match in Group B.

The all-rounder claimed 3-26 to help limit Ireland to 123-7 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

He dismissed Ireland captain William Porterfield with the first ball of the game and removed brothers Niall and Kevin O'Brien in the 15th over.

Dropped on 29, Watson hit 51 off 30 balls, with three sixes, as Australia eased home with 4.5 overs to spare.

A minor wobble aside - Watson and Mike Hussey fell in the same over with victory a near certainty - it represented an impressive start to the tournament for 2010 beaten finalists Australia.

Victory over West Indies in their final group match at this venue on Saturday will secure their place in the Super Eights, while Ireland's hopes of avoiding an early exit depend on how they fare against the Windies on Monday
ICC World Twenty20 Group A, Colombo

India 159-5 (20 overs) beat Afghanistan 136 (19.3 overs) by 23 runs

India had to draw on all their experience to overcome a spirited Afghanistan side by 23 runs in their opening match at the World Twenty20.

When Afghanistan were 75-2 after 11 overs, chasing 160 to win, a famous upset looked on the cards in Colombo.

But Yuvraj Singh took two wickets in two balls and, although Afghanistan still had hope into the latter stages, they were eventually dismissed for 136.

India survived four dropped catches to post 159-5, with Virat Kohli making 50.

Afghanistan, who face England on Friday, are appearing in only their second global tournament, but on this evidence they have the raw talent and determination to become a fixture in the biggest events.

If they have a flaw, it is their fielding, and were it not for the spilling of four routine catches, India could easily have been pegged back to a total that was well within reach.

Okay, I should have said, "parochial compared to..."

The Americas, Caribbean and Japan aside, baseball is a niche sport in the rest of the world. This is borne out by the fact that the World Baseball Classic has only been in existence since 2006. I had never heard of it and I bet most of the civilised (read: cricket playing) world hasn't either! :nana

Rubato tried to compare attendances between the sports but did it in a most disengeneous way. A more accurate reflection of global popularity would be to compare the figures like this:

1.) Number of people who attended a professional baseball game at any level over a given time period.
2.) Number of people who attended a professional football game at any level over a given time period.
3.) Number of people who attended a professional cricket game at any level over a given time period.
etc

Okay, I will also copy from and link to The Economist:
Doctor Me
THE return of “Doctor Who” to British screens last week did not get quite as much fanfare as the Olympics, but it was a close thing. No longer just a science-fiction serial which frightens children with rubber monsters, it is now a cornerstone of the Corporation’s output, praised to the skies by fans, critics and BBC continuity announcers alike. But as highly praised as “Doctor Who” is by its viewers, the programme praises itself even more. Right from the opening narration of last week’s episode, which hailed the Doctor as a legendary saviour, the dialogue did not miss an opportunity to stress how intelligent and noble and altogether fantastic he was.

ICC World Twenty20 Group C, Hambantota

South Africa 94-0 (12.4 overs) beat Zimbabwe 93-8 (20 overs) by 10 wickets

South Africa inflicted a crushing 10-wicket defeat on Zimbabwe to book their place in the World Twenty20 Super Eights and knock their opponents out.

The impressive Jacques Kallis claimed 4-15 and Morne Morkel 2-16 to limit Zimbabwe to 93-8 in a hugely one-sided game in Hambantota.

South Africa overhauled a modest target with 7.2 overs to spare as Richard Levi helped himself to an unbeaten 50.

The result also secured Sri Lanka's progress from Group C.

Zimbabwe, beaten in equally comprehensive fashion by Sri Lanka in the tournament opener on Tuesday, never threatened to defend their second lowest Twenty20 total.

Their competition lasted just three days and they return home before five of the 12 teams have played a game.

England 196-5 (20 overs) beat Afghanistan 80 (17.2 overs) by 116 runs

Luke Wright hit 99 not out as England began their World Twenty20 defence with a crushing 116-run win over Afghanistan to book a place in the Super Eights.

England were 0-1 after one over and 15-1 after four, but Wright, Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan transformed the innings with a barrage of boundaries.

Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow added late muscle to drive England to 196-5.

Afghanistan lost two wickets in the first seven balls and crumbled to 80 all out to go out of the tournament.
Biggest Twenty20 international victories

172 runs - Sri Lanka v Kenya (Johannesburg, 2007)
130 runs - South Africa v Scotland (The Oval, 2009)
116 runs - England v Afghanistan (Colombo, 2012)
109 runs - Zimbabwe v Canada (King City, 2008)
103 runs - Pakistan v New Zealand (Christchurch, 2010)
Jade Dernbach, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann and Samit Patel all took two wickets but there was no doubt about the man of the match.

Wright had been in the international wilderness for 15 months before he replaced the out-of-form Ravi Bopara for the two pre-tournament matches against South Africa earlier this month.

An inconsistent performer for England in the past, he has clearly benefited from spells in the Indian Premier League and Aussie Big Bash and come back with a game based around clean, straight hitting.

The Sussex all-rounder smashed six sixes and eight fours in 55 balls as he amassed his highest score in 79 limited-overs matches for England, missing out on a century by one run when he could only collect two from the last ball of the innings.

Wright entered the fray with England in a pickle after Craig Kieswetter played on from the last ball of a maiden first over from Shapoor Zadran.

He began slowly, but his innings took off in the fifth over as he drilled Shapoor for a straight four and a six after Hales had got England going with consecutive boundaries.

The duo added 69 for the second wicket before Hales was run out backing up when bowler Karim Sadiq diverted Wright's drive onto the non-striker's stumps.

Morgan kept up the momentum with a breezy 27 and Buttler bashed 15 off seven balls before he was trapped lbw by Izatullah Dawlatzai.

Bairstow bludgeoned his first ball into the stands and Wright smashed poor Izatullah for three sixes in a row to surge into the nineties.

Bairstow was out for 12 in the last over, leaving Wright to face the last ball on 97. A low full toss was heaved away to leg but when the wide long-on fielder did his job Wright had to settle for two, and 99 not out.

Gee, the last time I checked, I believe India had a population of around one billion....

But in rube's defense, it should be said that he probably has no idea that when it comes to national population a billion is "a lot"....or perhaps he had no idea what the population of India is; rube is pretty much a bottomless pit when it comes to lack of knowledge. Even after all these years, he hasn't lost his ability to still occasionally astound me in this regard...(Who would have thought that a supposedly college educated fifty-something year old man wouldn't know what the word "affluence" means? ...you really had to see it to believe it...)

But then of course math has never been rube's strong suit....

Of course we haven't ever seen what exactly is rube's strong suit, but I'm sure any year now he'll reveal it to us.....

It is immediately obvious from rubato's posting that the "Tiny tiny tiny countries" to which he refers are countries "Other than Pakistan and India". (I.e., "Other than Pakistan and India," the countries which "give[] a rat's ass" are "Tiny tiny tiny countries.")

You have bested him many times (though not as many times as you think you have) in contests of logical reasoning. But this time, you have allowed your antipathy toward him to overwhelm your perception of what he actually wrote.
Reason is valuable only when it performs against the wordless physical background of the universe.

You know what Andrew, in re-reading that I think you're right, that is probably what he intended....

Unlike rube, when I'm screw up I'm prepared to admit it, and I appear to have screwed up in this case....

I'm certainly not going to apologize to him however; he was attempting to be an ass wipe with the post in question, (as he so frequently does) so I feel no need to apologize, but I will concede that it looks like I got the wrong end of the stick on that one.

ETA:
this time, you have allowed your antipathy toward him to overwhelm your perception of what he actually wrote.
Actually, I think what it was is that I allowed my expectation of him to say stupid and/or ignorant things (which given the record, is generally a pretty solid expectation) to affect my giving what he said in that case a more thoughtful reading, before jumping to the "gee, there he goes again saying something ignorant while trying to insult somebody else" conclusion, (which I admit is my go-to conclusion with much of what rube does, because it is so frequently correct.)

The United States national cricket team is the team that represents the United States in international cricket matches. The team became an associate member of the International Cricket Council in 1965. The United States of America Cricket Association (USACA) was suspended by the ICC for – amongst other things – failure to hold office-bearers elections under the terms of a new constitution. However, as of April 1, 2008, the necessary reformations have been made under the supervision of the West Indies Cricket Board and the ICC has welcomed the USACA back into the council.

The USA have played in every edition of the ICC Trophy, though they didn't pass the first round until the 1990 tournament in the Netherlands. They reached the plate final of the 1994 tournament, but opted not to play due to prior travel arrangements. They finished twelfth in 1997 and sixth in 2001, their best performance to date. They have also played in every edition of the ICC Americas Championship, winning in 2002.

In 2004, the United States cricket team played a first-class match as part of the first ICC Intercontinental Cup. The matches against Canada and Bermuda were the first in many years. The team won the ICC 6 Nations Challenge beating Scotland, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the UAE on net run rate by 0.028 of a run.

Winning the ICC Six Nations meant that they qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 in England. Here the USA played their first ever One Day International match against New Zealand at The Oval on 10 September 2004.[20] The US side was beaten by New Zealand and lost to Australia in the tournament, as well

The 2005 ICC Trophy represented a chance for the USA to re-establish themselves on the world stage and qualify for the 2007 World Cup. A poor showing saw them finish at the bottom of their group, with four losses and a match abandoned due to rain from their five group fixtures. This failure robbed the USA of the prize of full One Day International status on offer to the World Cup qualifiers. This failure was compounded on August 9, 2005 when the ICC expelled the USA from the 2005 ICC Intercontinental Cup.

The USA made their return to international cricket in August 2006 when they participated in Division One of the ICC Americas Championship in Canada. They finished second in the five team tournament

ICC World Twenty20 Group B, Colombo

Australia 100 (9.1 overs) bt W Indies 191-8 (20 overs) by 17 runs (D/L)

Australia are through to the Super Eight phase of the World Twenty20 thanks to a 17-run Duckworth/Lewis victory over the West Indies.

Half-centuries from Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels powered the Windies to 191-8 after a slow start.

But some poor bowling and big hitting from David Warner and Shane Watson (41 not out) helped Australia surge to 100-1 off 9.1 overs when rain ended play.

The West Indies will play Ireland on Monday for the second qualifying spot.

"There was some good stuff and there was some very ordinary stuff as well," said Australian captain George Bailey.

"The challenge is to lessen the gap between the good and the ordinary stuff. We did do that in patches, but there were certainly patches when they got away from us."

Bailey's opposite number Darren Sammy reflected that, "The batsmen did what was required of them. We knew Australia would come back hard, and we took too long to respond."

The heavy Colombo rain denied spectators what could have been the most exciting finish of the tournament so far.
South Africa 78-4 (7 overs) beat Sri Lanka 46-5 (7 overs) by 32 runs

South Africa eased to a 32-run win over Sri Lanka in a match reduced to seven overs per side at the World Twenty20 in Hambantota.

After rain delayed the start by two and a half hours, South Africa posted 78-4, will captain AB de Villiers hitting 30 from only 13 balls.

Sri Lanka lost Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene early and eventually limped to 46-5.

Both sides had already qualified for the Super Eight stage.

After both teams had completed routine wins over Zimbabwe, the truncated nature of this game has provided little clues as to which side is in better shape for the second phase.

Indeed, one reason for the comfortable nature of South Africa's win could be the fact that they have recent experience in playing trimmed-down versions of T20 cricket, with two matches in England being reduced to nine and 11 overs respectively.

This win was built on the brilliance of De Villiers, who did not arrive at the crease until the end of the third over, but scored 30 of the 38 runs that were added in the next three.

Strong through the off side, De Villiers also twice cleared the leg-side fence, the second maximum a huge hit from a Lasith Malinga short ball.

When the skipper finally fell to Malinga, caught at mid off, it was left to JP Duminy to add a late boost by taking 10 from the final two balls of the innings.

Even then, South Africa's total looked to be in Sri Lanka's reach, particularly as the only other World T20 game reduced to seven overs saw New Zealand chase down Scotland's 89 with an over to spare in 2009.
