漂亮妹妹

Post by Gob »

The number of internet users accessing the web in Chinese is set to overtake English language users by 2015, according to a report by the UN Broadband Commission.

In May 2011, there were 565 million English internet users, compared to 510 million Chinese users, representing 27 per cent and 24 per cent of total global internet users, respectively.

The report predicts that if current growth rates continue, Chinese will overtake English as the main language used by internet users in 2015.

This switch is largely due to China's massive population, now over 1.3 billion people.

Just under 40 per cent of people in China use the internet, compared to 82 per cent in the United Kingdom, and 78 in the United States.

Internet adoption in China is happening with a stronger emphasis on mobile phones. Nearly half of all smartphones are now sold in China, but only 12 out of every 100 individuals have a fixed broadband subscription

I am forever grateful that I can speak English. It does make it so much easier for travel to many foreign speaking countries that they have learnt English as well.

I weep for my diminishing German skills, though German isn't that widely spoken either.

Maybe one day I will take a 'walk in the Black Forrest' and see how much Deutsch I can still understand and speak.
Bah!

Partly true, the internet got its nexus from DARPA in the late 1960's as a military/industrial interface.

The internet was/is/and will be soley the domain of English-speaking peoples, so there - China! :nana :fu :nana

My German skills have all but left me. I spent a summer in Germany with my cousing and Grandparents way back in 1975 and learned enough to converse (somewhat intelligently :? ). When we came back, I would talk to my grandparents in German as much as possible. Sadly my Grandfather passed away in 1984 and my Grandmother about 5 years ago. Since then I have not used it other than a phrase here or there.
