Brainy is the new sexy.

Post by Guinevere »

Well, duh. Not really so new at all. What is new is that Season 2 of Sherlock is now on Netflix!!! First episode was excellent. Can't wait to watch the next two. And would it be so difficult to make a bit longer season, please.

It is a terribly perverse thing to leave a viewer wanting so much more, but it is also a very clever thing to do as well.

As much as I join you in your desire for so much more, I also applaude that I have been reduced to a state of viewing greed and gluttony.

Thank god for the ability to replay!

I'm torn too, I'd love a six episode series, only if the quality could be maintained totally.

The desire is intensified due to the wanting.

On the plus side....
After the end of the final episode of the second series, Moffat and Gatiss both announced on Twitter that a third series was commissioned at the same time as series two. A part of the resolution to "The Reichenbach Fall" was filmed alongside series two. Executive producer Beryl Vertue confirmed, in March 2012, that the third series is expected to start production in early 2013, although it was too soon to relate any transmission details. Moffat later confirmed that the third series would begin production in January 2013. Gatiss has confirmed that he will write the first episode of the third series, and that it would be 'loosely based' on "The Adventure of the Empty House", in which Conan Doyle revealed that Holmes had faked his death. Gatiss also revealed that he plans to have Watson react very differently from the original character at the discovery of Holmes's return in season three; "I always found it a little unlikely that Dr Watson's only reaction was to faint for instance—as opposed to possibly a stream of terrible swear words," he said. Moffat and Thompson will again write the other two episodes.

Moffat aspires to tackle the fact that eventually Watson will be living apart from Holmes, though he's uncertain whether he'll have Watson get married in this adaptation. Moffat also wants to use other villains and adversaries from Conan Doyle's original stories. Without revealing if Moriarty faked his own death at the end of series two, Moffat has suggested that Moriarty will not feature heavily in future series of Sherlock.

Moffat and Gatiss have announced three words that allude to the content of the third series. These words were, "rat, wedding, bow". Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in August 2012, Moffat said that these words "may be misleading, are not titles, are only teases or possibly clues, but might be deliberately designed to get you into a lather."
Ok, speculating off the top of my head...

"rat" = Giant Rat of Sumatra? ("A tale for which the world is not yet ready!")

"Wedding" = "You would not call me a marrying man, Watson?" "No, indeed!" "You'll be interested to hear that I am engaged." "My dear fellow! I congrat ---" The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton?

Bow = His final Bow

Downton Abbey is a what, 6 or 8 episode season and its fabulous. Just enough to get deeply intertwined with the characters, but not enough to get bored. Like a sweet summer romance, that gives you warm memories all winter and leaves you ready for more. Three episodes of Sherlock is more like a fling sexy weekend. You're gasping and on edge at the end, and you want more, but the wait for more is so long, you have to move on.

Or something like that :)

Since some here haven't seen the 2nd three episodes, I don't want to give any spoilers....(I will say that I actually liked the second three even more than the first group; primarily because Watson wasn't portrayed as being as big a schlemiel as he was in the first set.)

It seems to me they certainly ought to be able to produce six episodes a year, (which is hardly an exhausting production schedule) without compromising the quality.

(Though I will say the writers really seem to have set themselves a task with their version of "The Final Problem"....

It may take them a full year to figure out how to work their way out of that one..... 8-) )

I think the quality of the writing, rather than the production, would be the main problem Jim.

I think another three episodes will be the end of it. There's something to be said for that, leaving it a (hopefully) unblemished classic. Though even "The Office" and "Falwty Towers" had a dozen episodes!

Finished off the series yesterday -- Reichenbach Falls was EXCELLENT (I thought Hounds was rather boring)!

I also watched the first two episodes of Elementary. It was just OK, very different than Sherlock, different energy, script not as crisp. Johnny Lee Miller was interesting, as a spoiled brat Sherlock Holmes, in recovery just out of rehab. He crackles with manic energy, so different than Cumberbatch's portrayal. Lucy Liu is a smarter Watson than Feeman's version (at least in season 1). It didn't strike me as odd at all that Watson was female. I will watch again, and see if it improves -- I do think it has promise.

I've seen a couple of episodes of Elementary, so far so good - very different from Sherlock though.

One thing that struck me is Just how many US programmes I'm watching that has a Brit in one of the lead or recurring roles.

Homeland - Damien Lewis, Nicholas Brody
Alphas - Ryan Cartwright, Gary Bell
Lie to Me (they cancelled this the bastards!) - Tim Roth, Cal Lightman
Arrow - Colin Salmon, Walter Steele

Is this down to the "House" effect?

Sorry, been busy and haven't really watched any more --- now that the snow is starting to fly, perhaps I'll watch again. Happy to share my opinion when I do!

Yes, a lot of actors and actresses from the UK find work in the US....

Probably because they like getting an adult sized actor's pay check, and getting steady work that lasts longer than six episodes.... :P

Plus the weather's a lot better in Southern California than it is in Leeds...
