"High pain threshold" WTH?
Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
However, with the pepper spray, a few others and I were hit in definately uncalloused areas: the face, the neck and eyes, et al. Some had the misfortune to inhale the capsicum spray, or swallow it; where they felt the effects internally, yet still completed the course requirements.
Where you came in contact with the mist, the sensation was of intense burning. Personally, I describe it as a third-degree burn, since I've gotten burnt to the third degree and think the pain level is very similar.
Regardless, the Marine Sgt. Instructor thought my response was excellent, when in spite of the pain, I followed all instuctions and orders, up to and including assisting others through the course.
My impression is/was of two levels of experience:
1) You feel the pain; the body's alarm system- telling you something is very wrong.
2) But, You feel the body's normal systems: the sense of touch, the sense of muscle function and reaction; telling you- all systems are functioning normally.
While being hit with pepper spray the pain alarms are sounding full blast, BUT if you are paying attention to the actually bodily functions, then rationaly you know that nothing physically wrong is happening to you.
That way you can feel the pain, but you can tolerate it and to continue to think and react.

Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
Bad example...reactions to CP vary wildly. I work with someone who it utterly unaffected by it. The combination of repeated exposure and a lifetime of eating food hot enough to border on weapon-grade status (His homemade salsa will eat a plastic bowl!) mean it just doesn't really bother him.
Treat Gaza like Carthage.
Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
You are correct, there are different reactions to CP, but it sounds like your friend also had what I suggested led to pain tolerance: conditioning.
He had a life-time of exposure to pepper oils and spices to build up his conditioning. Most Mexicans are like that; you don't give small children the really hot food, until they've built up a tolerance for it. The reason for Hispanics to want to eat spicy food is it contains a great deal of vitamin C, more than oranges; and they say the hotter the pepper, the more vitamin C it will have.

Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
How would a lifetime of eating hot spicey foods make a person immune from the affects of being pepper sprayed in the eyes?
Eating spicey foods wouldn't have any affect at all.
That's like saying a person who has always drank a lot of hot coffee would be unaffected by hot coffee being poured on his face & eyes
I'm late to this thread & haven't read all of it.
Did I miss something?

You've never been in a Mexican kitchen, have you Joe? Our cooking can stink up the whole house for generations!
Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
One of my two favorite Aunts married a Mexican. I grew up surrounded by Mexicans and eating the food they prepared.loCAtek wrote:You've never been in a Mexican kitchen, have you Joe? Our cooking can stink up the whole house for generations!
I eat jalapenos almost every day and use crushed red chili peppers on my food.
Still, if I were to have hot pepper sprayed into my eyeballs, I would experience a burning sensation like everyone else would.
Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
If you let me film it, I would be happy to test your hypothesis.

Bah!

Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
Well, so far then, I can't explain why you're a wuss.

Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
And there we have it!
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
FWIW I was wondering if you've been in contact PMSP offline?

Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
Strange thing to wonder about, what with me meaning so little and being of no relevance and all that ...

Bah!

Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?

Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
Why would you want to evade that question?
Re: "High pain threshold" WTH?
I just want to know why you want to know, Lo.
For someone who is only 'Just wondering', you seem to be getting quite het up about it.
I want to know the REAL reason you want to know.
Now be honest, Lo. When you tell me WHY you want to know, I will answer you.
My record shows I am always honest.
