There have been outpourings of support for the United States many times after disasters; including 9-11.

But the fact is we are not like Haiti, poor and with few resources to help ourselves. We are rich, relatively, and have enough resources that it would be wrong for people much worse off than ourselves to sacrifice on our behalf.

You are there because you wanted to be there, and you paid a huge premium for the privelege. And I hope you are grateful for your taxpayer-subsidized flood insurance because in the opinion of just about everyone who is aware of it, this is a boondoggle that should be eliminated.

Why would we want aid from any other country? The Chinese will lend us all the dollars we need.

Israel no longer receives any economic aid from the US, except for a refugee resettlement program. (When it did, the amount was minuscule compared to military aid.) Of the military "aid," three-fourths of it goes directly to American defense contractors (supporting 60,000 to 70,000 American workers) who use Israel as a laboratory for developing their products. I read somewhere that something like 600 modificatons to the F-15 were introduced as a result of Israeli suggestions for improvement. Of the aid spent on Israeli defense industries, a significant amount goes to R&D programs whose developments are shared with the US military, as well as to joint ventures in developing new sytems such as missile defense. Israel also acts as a forward base and munitions stockpile for the US military's activities in the region, to say nothing of its intelligence services to the US.

There are a lot of reasons to bash Israel and the US-Israel relationship, but this probably isn't one of them.

Britain borrowed heavily from the USA during World War I, and many loans from this period remain in a curious state of limbo. In 1931, President Herbert Hoover announced a one-year moratorium on war loan repayments from all nations, due to the global economic crisis, but by 1934 Britain still owed the USA $4.4bn of WWI debt (about £866m at 1934 exchange rates). Adjusted for inflation, that would amount to around £40bn today, and if adjusted by the growth of British GDP, to about £225 billion. During the Great Depression Britain effectively ceased payments on these loans, which have never been formally written off.[9]

The UK is about to pay off the last of its World War II loans from the US.

On 31 December 2006, the UK will make a payment of about $83m (£45.5m) to the US and so discharge the last of its loans from World War II from its transatlantic ally.

It is hard from a modern viewpoint to appreciate the astronomical costs and economic damage caused by this conflict. In 1945, Britain badly needed money to pay for reconstruction and also to import food for a nation worn down after years of rationing.

"In a nutshell, everything we got from America in World War II was free," says economic historian Professor Mark Harrison, of Warwick University.

"The loan was really to help Britain through the consequences of post-war adjustment, rather than the war itself. This position was different from World War I, where money was lent for the war effort itself."

My "ungodly expensive little hovel" is 112 years old. It's weathered worse storms than Sandy, and will continue to weather them long after your bony ass is mouldering in the ground.

My "cute little town on the shore" has been an incorporated Town since 1644, and was first settled in 1622. It and so many others will also be in existence long after your bony ass is mouldering in the ground.

As a nation we make policy decisions every day that help populate areas and influence where people live. Your suburban "dream home" comes courtesy of tax exemptions and the federally planned, constructed, and maintained interstate highway system. I assume you are down on your knees thanking the gubmint every day for making that possible.
