Can you plug in your house or are you doing the "extension cord shuffle"?

Re: Just frickin great.
I got power back sunday. When I got the generator I was on the extension cords to the fridge and the entertainment center. I was laying in bed wednesday night trying to figure out the easiest way to hook up the whole house (5500W generator) and get the oil burner running (showers) without having to open up the electical panel. It dawned on me, I wired up the in wall AC unit some 15 years ago and used 10awg wire. That connects to both phases of the house/breaker panel. I had just replaced the AC unit this summer and the old one was still in the yard (waiting for this procrastinator to take it to the metal recycler). I cut the cord off it, wired it to two extension cords (the generator has two seperate 20amp 110V outlets) and plugged in and had the whole house up and running. Of course I shut off the main breaker prior to plugging in, just in case the power came back.Jarlaxle wrote:Glad to see you're OK!

So, while there were two extension cords snaking from the yard through the window and into where the AC plug was, we didn't have to unplug this, plug in that, etc.
5500W is 50 amps, very rare that a house needs 50 amps at one time. Just don't weld, run the central AC and air compressor all at the same time.

No rest for the weary....

Nor'easter has Sandy-ravaged region in its crosshairs
Just as the beleaguered Northeast struggles to get off the canvas after superstorm Sandy, a nor’easter is brewing that will sweep through the region beginning Wednesday, bringing freezing temperatures, high winds, more flooding and possibly snow.
As the nation prepared to choose a president, many flood-ravaged residents of the New Jersey and New York coasts are still without power and trying to find shelter, salvage possessions and get essentials like gas, batteries and food. And adding urgency to their task is a storm developing off the coast of Georgia tonight, which is expected to strengthen as it moves north, with the same area Sandy hit in its crosshairs.
“The Saga of Sandy continues as we are left with an exposed population in coastal areas with a powerful storm in its own right coming,” said meteorologist Joe Bastardi of WeatherBell.com.
Bastardi said an area of high winds “with an eye-like structure” will emerge off the mid-Atlantic coast by Wednesday night. He said it could produce a surge of seawater, which could flood coastal homes anew and further erode devastated shorelines.
"It can't be as bad as the last storm," Artie Urso, 55, whose Seaside Heights, N.J., home was leveled by Sandy, told FoxNews.com. "How much worse can it get?
"It can't make the buildings any worse than they already are," he added.
The National Weather Service deemed the nor’easter “significant,” and said it's on track to hit the New York area as early as dawn on Wednesday. The storm could bring wind gusts of up to 60 mph, which could cause more power outages and hamper recovery efforts. It could linger for days, bringing several inches of rain, according to officials. The greatest risk of new coastal flooding was expected Wednesday night, when rains could combine with evening high tide.
"It's going to impact many areas that were devastated by Sandy. It will not be good," said Bruce Terry, the lead forecaster for the National Weather Service.
The American Red Cross, already encamped in hard-hit areas along the Jersey Shore and in New York’s Staten Island, Queens and Long Island, summoned extra supplies to the region as the storm gathered.
"In anticipation of the nor'easter, we are sending in an additional 80,000 blankets and bringing food and relief supplies to the hardest hit areas," said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president of Disaster Services for the Red Cross. "We are doing everything possible to get help to where it is needed and are extending our reach into more affected communities every day."
Some communities still reeling from Sandy’s effects were considering new evacuations, and officials in southern New Jersey’s Atlantic County urged people to brace for new outages by going out to “replenish storm supplies, such as flashlights, batteries, medications, non-perishable food, baby and pet supplies.”
While the nor’easter won’t be nearly as powerful as Sandy, the possibility of snow makes it a powerful follow-up punch to the brutal and unprecedented storm that hit just a week ago.
“Unlike Hurricane Sandy, there’s nothing really unusual about this storm,” said meteorologist Geoff Fox, of Fox Connecticut affiliate WTIC. “This is a type of storm New England and the Northeast get often.
“It just seems unfair it’s coming now!” he added.

Re: Just frickin great.
I, for one, am ignoring it....
ETA: The way the tides look for Wednesday/Thursday, the low tide will be during the expected peak of the storm -- although more precise forecast still to be determined. That will help my neighborhood, and I hope others. Plus, its not the astonomically high tides it was during Sandy. I have had more damage and devastation in my 'hood from Nor'Easters than from either of the two hurricanes, so honestly, this storm forecast isn't helping my already somewhat edgy day.

We know nor'easters. We get one or two a year. Problem this time is the barrier beaches are breeched and the beach communities are still evaluating the loss (forget about rebuilding at this time). Buckle up, hunker down and get ready for the knock out punch. Hopefuly we can duck and it will only glance us or not be as hard as we thought.
I was going to let my son take the generator so he can get electricity in his house, but we decided him and his GF will stay with us and I'll hold on to the generator in case we lose power yet again.
Tonight I go to my meeting then gas hunting (after voting of course).

Re: Just frickin great.
oldr you were saying yesterday that the power hadn't been restored in Westbury yet - do you know if there was a lot of damage there? I ask because my mother has a cousin there whom she has been trying unsuccessfully to reach by telephone.

I work near the old Westbury Drive in theater (By the Music Fair on Brush Hollow Road) which has power in our immediate surroundings. I was in downtown Westbury (Post Avenue about half way between Jericho Tpke and Old Country road) yesterday and was surprised at the area that did not have power.Scooter wrote:oldr you were saying yesterday that the power hadn't been restored in Westbury yet - do you know if there was a lot of damage there? The deli I get lunch from (on Post Ave) did not have power yesterday but does have it today. Westbury school district was still closed today but haven't seen any updates on being open tomorrow. Jericho is starting to get power as you move westward. Seems as I go west it gets worse. I grew up in Mineola and the other day took a ride around the old neighborhood. My block (Roselle Street) lost a few big trees I remember from childhood. Took the whole sidewalk and part of the street with them. Didn't break, they were uprooted.
If you need more personal info scooter send a PM. If need be I'll drop by your moms cousins house and make sure all is well.

Thanks oldr, it doesn't sound like there was any wholesale destruction, so I imagine he's ok. I'll let my mother know about your offer and if she is concerned enough to take you up on it, I'll let you know.

You know, for all the talk of "toxicity" in some quarters, there are some really decent sorts around here....

I know what it's like to be out of touch and worrying. My cousin was in Boston on 9/11 and was supposed to fly out that morning to Ca (I think it was Ca). We were worried she was on the plane that came out of boston. Couldn't get a hold of her for a few days.
Let me know scooter, I work in Westbury by the music fair and grew up in Mineola so I know the area well.

My mom said she was going to try to call him again today. If she still isn't able to get through I'll let you know.

It's getting cold here today. And with a nor'easter coming hope he has power. They were saying yesterday that north of LI for snow, but now they say LI could get 3" or more. And I don't have the plow on my tractor. Means I'll have to shovel by hand.
Oh wait, the son is staying with us until he gets power AND gets home around 2pm AND is off tomorrow. He better have his ass out shoveling the driveway. No free lunches (or dinners) in my house.

Re: Just frickin great.
Why shovel oldr? My understanding is it's likely to turn to rain after midnight, and temperatures will rise tomorrow; I don't expect any snow to stay around for long. You may have to shovel your walk, but I think you could easily drive over any snow in your driveway for a day or so. Heck, my driveway is fuull of leaves (even though I cleaned it a few days ago).
Re: Just frickin great.
We're not supposed to get any snow on the east side -- just west and north --- I think you'll be fine oldr. Do be careful with the wind and wave -- it's already blowing over the seawall at my house.

If the tide hits me, Long Island will be gone (and so will I). The only thing left will be Bald Hill and the Veitnam Memorial Monument about 1 mile north and 1/2 mile east of me.

I just went outside and see sleet. While we may not get an accumulation of snow, roads will suck. Hopefully we keep power and I can grab the last 5 gallon can of gas I have saved. Generator is stilled filled up, but that is next.

We've been getting a heavy fall of wet snow here for about an hour (since noon), but nothing's sticking -- yet.

We have a bit but mostly it's slush on the road/parking lots. Cars are covered with about 1/2 inch. No wind here in Westbury, maybe it's out east. After all it is a nor'EASTER.
