Its no wonder then that between drinks with friends and extra hours in the office health conscious Brits are struggling to find time to maintain their fitness levels and visit the gym.
The answer could be to turn in to an after hours gym bunny like the A-listers: hitting the treadmill after work and play when everybody else is heading home to bed.
A new survey has revealed that one in ten members use the gym between 10pm and 6am, with 52 per cent of these visits taking place around the midnight mark.
The research also revealed that 83 per cent of gym goers are now more likely to go to a gym with 24-hour access so they can fit it into their busy schedule.
With their non-stop work commitments, celebrities are leading the way in taking advantage of after-dark workouts.
Rihanna is one such fan and has been spotted heading to the gym at 10pm after a long day in the studio.
According to her trainer Ary Nunez this midnight session was no one off and said the star manages to fit a workout into everyday even if it means the middle of the night.
He told Grazia magazine: 'We train when she's ready. Even if we're on the road and it's 2a.m., I'm on call 24/7 with her.'
Jonelle Roberts, 24, is a member of The Gym in Vauxhall and typically works out at around 2.00am after finishing her late night shifts at Selfridges.
She said: 'There are no contracts or time restrictions, so you can come and go when you want. There might be a time when I can't make visiting the gym fit in with my other commitments, so I can just put my membership on hold.'
John Treharne, CEO of The Gym Group, who carried out the research, said: 'There are a huge number of people in the UK that have work schedules and family commitments which make it difficult for them to visit a gym during the day.'

I'm up at 5:29am every day. Take the dog for a walk and hopefully the newspaper has been delivered by the time wwe get back. It's his job to carry in the newspaper and he gets grumpy if it isn't there on time.

We'll be off to play some tennis this a.m. before breakfast. But I'm woken up at 5 a.m. every bloody day by the birds nattering outside our bedroom window. There's a Piet-my-vrou that starts shouting shortly after 4 a.m. to get things rolling and then the Masked Weavers kick in and eventually one may as well get up and start on Plan B. (Plan A was stay asleep).

5 AM pikers! I am up at 3:30 AM and onthe road to work by 5AM. Hit the time clock at 5:30AM. Plenty of exercise on the job.

If time is really the issue, it might be worth noting that one can get a fantastic aerobics workout in less than 15 minutes, and 10 minutes of body-weight calisthenics a couple times a week is plenty. No fitness membership required.
Just sayin'.
