Re: Tri Cycling
While I just luv this;

... I need to do a short lesson in español, here. A quicky translation of 'wot', seems to be 'que', as the Spanish language does use 'que' when asking 'what?'
However, a native speaker will use the word 'cómo' as an interjection, in this context.
Cómo usually means 'how', as in:
¿Cómo estas? <How are you?>
¿Cómo se dice...? <How do you say ...?>
You shorten it to just ¿Cómo? if you didn't hear someone; or you're confused or surprised. It's like exclaiming, 'Huh?'
¡Cómo!, ¿que pasa? <Huh!? What happened?>
Which is more what, LOL WOT is expressing.
We still use LOL though, not trans for that.

Re: Tri Cycling
"¿Qué?" for 'What?' was popularized by the Spanish impersonation by Andrew Sachs on Fawlty Towers.
A brilliant portrayal of a well-meaning but disorganised and constantly confused waiter from Barcelona with a limited grasp of the English language and customs.

Irony, eh?

Re: Tri Cycling
Nope, he's was a fictional Spaniard(written by Brits) while I'm a real Mexican. Mexicans don't speak Castilian - the Spanish that is spoken in Spain. We speak Español mexicano. The cartoon depicts a Mexican pear, note the traditional sombrero and mustache worn by mestizos, and not by the conquistador Spaniards, therefore it also would not speak Castilian.
From the Español mexicano. link;
From the Español mexicano. link;
Lexicon
Mexican Spanish retains a number of words that are considered archaic in Spain.
...
The use of "¿Qué?" ("What?") on its own is sometimes considered impolite, unless it is accompanied by a verb: "¿Qué dijiste?" ("What did you say?") or "¿Qué pasó?" ("What happened?"). Otherwise "¿Cómo?" ("How?") is preferred.
Re: Tri Cycling
You mean, deliberate exaggeration of the truth, shouldn't be taken seriously?
I'm shocked! So, why does that only apply here, and not elsewhere?

Re: Tri Cycling
Once again the irony is lost... and thus proves the irony.

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: Tri Cycling
You need to understand the difference between sarcasm and sarchasm...
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: Tri Cycling
The irony was that it was a saying popularized by a Spanish waiter with poor English, who also obviously had poor Spanish as well. And actually only one of the writers was British, the other was American.
It is only incidentally ironic that you missed that.

Re: Tri Cycling
BTW it's worth pointing out that Castilian is just one of the many dialects spoken in Spain...

Re: Tri Cycling
It has nothing to do with that Mexican pear. I was TRYING to educate you as to where the phrase gained popularity in Western society, but obviously I didn't explain simply enough when I said ....
Here is an example of the use of the word in a funny episode. If you still can't grasp that then I will post some colorful pictures for you later. The Hen wrote:"¿Qué?" for 'What?' was popularized by the Spanish impersonation by Andrew Sachs on Fawlty Towers.
Fawlty Towers wrote:Mrs. Richards: [to Manuel] Now, listen to me. I have reserved a very quiet room with a bath an a sea view. I specifically asked for a sea view in my written confirmation, so please make sure I have it.
Manuel: Que?
Mrs. Richards: Kay?
Manuel: Si.
Mrs. Richards: Sea? Kay, sea? What are you trying to say?
Manuel: No, no, no. Que... what.
Mrs. Richards: Kay Watt?
Manuel: Si, que what.
Mrs. Richards: C.K. Watt?
Manuel: Yes!
Mrs. Richards: Is he the manager, Mr. Watt?
Manuel: Oh, manajer!
Mrs. Richards: He is?
Manuel: Ah, Mister Fawlty!
Mrs. Richards: What?
Manuel: Fawlty!
Mrs. Richards: What are you talking about, you
Bah!

Re: Tri Cycling
Please also note, Manuel from Fawlty Towers has nothing to do with Che Guevara either. It is just funny that Che and 'que' are similar words in the English language.
Bah!

Re: Tri Cycling
LMAO - Prepare yourself for the "Che and que are not English words" lecture Hen...

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: Tri Cycling
I'll get this concept of humour through to her ..... [a la Manuel] even-chew-ally [/a la Manuel]
Edited to enhance the Manuel-speak for those that get the reference.
