And now for some good news.

Post by rubato »

The average fuel economy of new cars and light trucks improved by 22.6% in only 5 years! Huge improvement.

This chart is interesting because it shows how mpg was increased so quickly back ca. 1980:

The two big means of improving efficiency without a long research program are to cut weight and reduce horsepower. Less mass is less mass to accelerate over and over again. And the easy way to cut HP is to cut displacement. Less displacement is a smaller volume of air being pulled into the cylinder and less fuel is needed per combustion. By 1984 a 200HP car was a rare thing and there were many cars sold which weighed ca 2,200lbs (the Honda CRX weighed 1,800lbs).

In the decades in-between they have done the slower and more difficult job of making engines more efficient AND more powerful. Today, many cars have 200hp, 300hp isn't really rare and there are few cars which weigh under 3,000lbs, a typical sedan weighs about 3,200 lbs.

As a sidelight the use of variable valve technology made a big jump in the last 5 years. But I'm surprised there was still that much room for improvement. Honda first introduced it almost 25 years ago with the v-tech engine (followed quickly by Toyota and then BMW)

Great news and good for us.

We can make an even bigger jump by reducing sales of Pickups and SUVs; vehicles which are badly designed for the use they are almost always put to; hauling 1 person plus some shopping. But if we can educate people about the connection between overeating and looking like whales they will no longer need cars designed to transport whale-shaped people. Fitter people will want cars which reflect their sleeker and more agile selves. Another win-win!

Whilst I agree that smaller, lighter cars with leaner engines are better for most people both for their pockets and the environment I'm finding a problem getting a new SUV that is heavy enough and provides enough torque to pull our caravan, manufacturers are making them lighter and less powerful in the mid range because of EU greening regulations.

It's going to probably push us into Land Rover/Range Rover territory or possibly a pickup truck, but lots of caravan sites won't take people towing with pickups because of the pikey connection.

But no one would mistake you for a pikey, surely? Or maybe.....

Trailering is a good reason for a bigger and more powerful vehicle. But if you only do it a few times a year maybe you can rent a tow vehicle for those times and not pay the penalty of having something less good for everything else the rest of the time? I don't know what the rental situation is in UK but I bet there is a peer-to-peer system for that by now.

No, renting an SUV with a tow bar is practically impossible at reasonable rates, £500 per week for just the car, additional driver and euro travel is another £10 per day each if we fancy going over to France or Ireland.

Plus half the fun of 'vanning is checking the forecast and heading off for a weekend whenever you fancy it.

And the other half is causing five mile tailbacks....

You're kidding. That sounds crazy expensive. (although European car rentals are very expensive vs the US, we paid $300 for a Citroen C4 for a week this year) I can rent a BMW 335i for less than that from National. Have you actually checked with whatever your version of Craig's list is? There has to be a peer-to-peer service that's better than that.
