Two recent Quotes from Dylan...

Post by Joe Guy »

that I like....
Oh, yeah. Critics have been giving me a hard time since Day One. Critics say I can't sing. I croak. Sound like a frog. Why don't critics say that same thing about Tom Waits? Critics say my voice is shot. That I have no voice. Why don't they say those things about Leonard Cohen? Why do I get special treatment? Critics say I can't carry a tune and I talk my way through a song. Really? I've never heard that said about Lou Reed. Why does he get to go scot-free?
....After that it was time for our national anthem. And a very popular soul-singing sister was chosen to sing. She sang every note -- that exists, and some that don't exist. Talk about mangling a melody. You take a one-syllable word and make it last for 15 minutes? She was doing vocal gymnastics like she was on a trapeze act. But to me it was not funny.

Well they don't say it about Len because it's not true.

I've been saying it about The Late Leonard Cohen for years...

The guy can't carry a tune in a bucket... William Hung sounds like Enrico Caruso by comparison...

Randy Newman and John Prine may not have great voices, but at least they can write decent lyrics...

Justin Bieber is a better song writer then Lenny....

LJ's right. I shouldn't have said "it's not true". I should have said "No one of any consequence thinks it's true".

I'm afraid he's quite disarmed

I find Bieber's lyrics considerably less trite and insipid...

Dylan's been dead for ages, how come he's still giving quotes?

:ok @ Gob!

I have to admit I gave up on Dylan when he started those gospel records; I'm sure some liked them, but I was not a fan.

And as for the OP, as a person who enjoys Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen (although not to the level some here do) I have heard the horrible voice comments for them many times, same for Lou Reed.

And Jim, Justin Bieber? You sure you're not a 12 year old girl with hearing problems? I can't put him up against any legitimate musician/composer and find him superior, even those whose writing I hate. His "music" isn't even good enough to hate.

Nor could I...

The key words there being "legitimate musician/composer"...
