Commending people by category, whether it be an entire race or a small group of people of one race, is not complimentary. It reeks of elitism and snobbery.

Absolutely invalid comparisons, Scooter. Saying that you enjoyed a performance by an orchestra or were impressed by the skills of a team is not even remotely the same.

Those are ascribing characteristics and character to people based on their race. Of course the implication is that "this is how Vietnamese are". Noted: these are complimentary words - not insults. But what the heck is the difference between saying that Vietnamese are good-humored and blacks have rhythm? None whatsoever.

It's a racist comment although rubato did not intend his remarks to be racist.

One further point to add here:

On the other hand I've been very impressed by my Vietnamese colleagues. Really amazing people*. I think I would enjoy the social aspects of living there.

*My wife loves her Vietnamese patients as well. Tough, uncomplaining, hardworking, good-humored, courageous, express themselves from the heart.

This is no defense of rubato and it will probably seem odd coming from the liberal thug-hugger, but c'mon, this is political correctness gone nuts!

People of certain nationalities DO exhibit certain cultural traits, typically. OF COURSE the stereotypes don't hold true to all members of that cultural group, but in my experience, more often than not.

Vietnamese and Thai people are lovely, courteous, friendly and kind.

Canadians are much the same.

Americans are brash outspoken mannerless assholes.
