One of the things that had me shaking my head about this story, is how the news reports have said that the kid "jokingly" told his mother that he was going to climb into the gorilla enclosure...

In my experience, three year olds tend to be literalists; they don't "joke" much about what crazy things they intend to do...they are telling you precisely what their course of action is going to be...

For example, when a three year old tells you he wants to see how Santa gets into the house, the next thing you can expect him to do is try to climb into the fireplace....(that one I can tell you from personal experience)

If a three year old tells you that they think they can fly, that may sound like a joke to an adult, but it is a sincerely held belief to a three year old...

You don't just say "no you can't"....

You keep a close eye on them, and you make sure they don't go near an open window...

Three year olds are natural fantastical thinkers with no sense of danger or potential consequences...

I'm not looking for a pissing match with you or anybody Guin, I simply had my own thoughts to express on the subject.

And, I don't entirely agree with your assessment. The zoo officials made the only decision they could once the idiot mother let her brat get into the enclosure. It's tragic for them and I feel a great deal of sympathy for the keepers who were forced to destroy an animal for which they doubtless had great affection.
