Yeah, Ward is all class...
She ran a really nasty primary challenge against McCain in 2016, (which after showing some strength in early polling she lost badly) and then right after he announced his cancer diagnosis she called on him to resign so that she could be appointed to his seat...
Ward is a right-wing crackpot gadfly (She once said she was "open to" a conspiracy theory about airplanes spreading mind control chemicals, earning her the nickname "Chemtrail Kelli"); sort of Arizona's version of Nevada nutbar Sharron Angle...
The one she really should be pissed at isn't McCain it's Joe Arpaio...
One-on-one she was leading the far stronger general election candidate, Congresswoman Martha McSally; a mainstream conservative with a
very appealing back story, similar to that of Kentucky Democratic Congressional candidate Amy McGrath:
Martha Elizabeth McSally (born March 22, 1966) is an American combat veteran and politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Arizona's 2nd congressional district, elected in 2014. A Republican and retired military officer, she served in the United States Air Force from 1988 to 2010, rising to the rank of colonel. One of the highest ranking female pilots in the history of the Air Force, McSally was the first American woman to fly in combat following the 1991 lifting of the prohibition on female combat pilots.
She flew the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II 'Warthog' close air support aircraft over Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Southern Watch.[1] She was also the first female commander of a USAF fighter squadron, the 354th Fighter Squadron (354 FS) based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. In 2001, she successfully sued the United States Department of Defense in McSally v. Rumsfeld, challenging the military policy that required United States and United Kingdom servicewomen stationed in Saudi Arabia to wear the body-covering abaya when traveling off base in the country.

But since Arpaio entered the race he's been splitting the whackadoodle GOP primary vote with Ward, and McSally has been leading in the polls ever since. The most recent poll has her now opening up a 20 point lead:

The Dems should also be pissed with Arpaio; the latest general election poll (which is now about a month old) has the Dem candidate Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema leading McSally, but only by 4 points. She has a much bigger lead over Ward and Arpaio:
In this poll, OH Predictive Insights found Sinema leading Arpaio by a huge margin at 54-36 percent (+18). Sinema also has a double-digit lead against Ward; 51-41 percent (+10). Against McSally, Sinema leads 48-44 percent, an improvement for McSally from 48-42 percent in June, but still behind for a red state.

Back when it appeared Ward would win the nomination, this looked like the easiest pick up of the four GOP Senate seats the Dems have a shot at. But McSally is a candidate who is tailor-made for a general election race in Arizona, and after she has what has been a particularly ugly primary race behind her she probably won't get anything but stronger. It will likely take a
really big blue wave for her to be defeated.
If I lived in Arizona, McSally would certainly have my vote...
