CNN - and I assume other - has been playing a video recording. You can hear Trump talking and someone is shouting 'He's got a gun!' a few seconds before he is shot. And you can see the (presumably) LEO sniper in the roof shooting at something off frame - so I don't know if 'He's got a gun!' refers to the LEO on the roof or the presumed would-be assassin.

And I just heard the normally very strait-laced Dana Bash saying "that's some real Iwo Jima shit!"

Early investigation of the shooting is showing that the bullet entered Trump's left ear and exited his right ear. The emergency room doctor stated that Trump was lucky he was only shot in the head. "If a bullet had entered any other part of his body, it very likely would have damaged one of his functioning vital organs", the doctor reported.

Meade that’s kinda funny but how sad that Halyna is still dead and we’re still stuck with Trump.

Now that it has personally affected Trump. Tow will his minions feel when he suddenly turns pro gun control?
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

I think I should probably send screenshots of this thread to the Secret Service and FBI.
Don't worry Jarl, I'm sure most of the folks on this board fully expect to face retribution if Trump and his MAGA goons get back into power. It's a little bit late to stop exercising our freedom of speech in the hopes that we can be MAGA lapdogs in future - no doubt you've got a library of screenshots to share with your overlords.

FYI: nothing said in this thread is remotely actionable, but please go right ahead, it is for the moment still a free country.

You might want to look up Steve Scalise's ratings with NRA, Gun Owners of America, etc. Mark Kelley personally lobbied him on gun control not long after he returned to work and Scalise stayed firm in his support for generally lax gun regulation.

Interesting. Lots of live footage from last night. CNN have taken the time to bleep out the bad words but the sound of the gunfire is left in. So we can’t cope with the odd ‘fuck’ or ’shit’ (or equivalent) but gunfire, which killed at least two people, is OK? Americans are weird.

It's the FCC - no swearing may be aired from 6am-10pm on account of the kiddies.

Apparently the shooter was 400 to 500 feet away - if he got Trump's ear from that distance with a handheld rifle, he was a pretty good shot. Oswald got JFK from less than 300 feet (OK JFK was moving) but he had time to set up the means to prop up his rifle. We don't know much about Thomas Crooks yet except that he was young (20), a Republican and AFAIK not ex-military.

They should find whoever it was and throw the person in jail for being a lousy shot.

CBS reports the Secret Service killed the shooter.
Yup. They found him 148 yards away, and executed him, ASAP.
They say they're looking for a motive. Why? We all know his motive, saving democracy.
Had Drumph been looking out over his meager crowd instead of to his right, the AR-15 bullet would have gone through his head, likely doing little damage.

130 yards with most rifles isn't a long shot.

It's my understanding that minimal qualifications for the US Army "Marksman" badge is that the recruit be able to hit 23 out of 40 pop-up man-sized silhouette targets at ranges from 5 to 300 yards — so as Jarl says, hitting something from 150 yards isn't something that only Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, or Sgt. York was able to do.  Now add a half-way decent scope that was sighted in to that distance to the rifle, and hell — even I could probably hit what I was aiming at.

I can do it with iron sights. (Indeed, I used to shoot paint cans at 150 yards.)

I turned on my usual Morning Joe today and they were yanked off the air, replaced by some nameless drones from the news division doing endless coverage of the assassination attempt.

Apparently MSNBC executives don't think Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski have the chops to cover the story???
