No, that's semantics, which the Grammar Nazis, re: pedants, are debating rather than the real issue. ;)

The point was: is life sacred or worthless? Granted, there are degrees, so discuss...

No one was debating that point until you used it to show your utter inability to understand the use of a dictionary. You don't want to debate these things, then don't introduce them into debate, and don't keep hammering away at showing your complete ignorance once you've been corrected.

Degrees of scared or worthless? :lol: :loon

Something is either sacred or not. Something either has worth, or is worthless.

Black and White = false choices

A false dilemma (also called false dichotomy, the either-or fallacy, fallacy of false choice, black-and-white thinking or the fallacy of exhaustive hypotheses)

Lucky I don't have to justify myself to you Rubato as I couldn't really be arsed!
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

There are degrees now? There didn't seem to be when you wrote:
Stoat, you'd prefer life wasn't sacred, and worthless?

Oh god, beam me up Scotty...

If you say something is sacred it means;
sa·cred

adjective
1. devoted or dedicated to a deity or to some religious purpose; consecrated.
2. entitled to veneration or religious respect by association with divinity or divine things; holy.
3. pertaining to or connected with religion
Please explain to me how life can have a "degree" of these qualities.

If you say something is worthless, it means;
worth·less

adjective
1. without worth; of no use, importance, or value; good-for-nothing: a worthless person; a worthless contract.
Please explain to me how life can have a "degree" of these qualities.
absolute modifier

Definition: a modifier that can't or shouldn't be compared (that is, be used in comparative or superlative form) because it stands for qualities that aren't matters of degree
I'll have you speaking correct English yet... No charge for this lesson..

ROTFLMCO!! Someone who, in this thread alone, has been proved multiple times not to have the slightest understanding of what she posts, accuses me of not being "deep" enough..

I think she wants you to join her in the hole she's dug... That's pretty deep.

Very good. That's two words you've identified as not being the same.

I really think you should start with 'A' before leaping to 'M' though. Just a little advice...

But that is like saying "Is that bus yellow or is it fast?" They are different. Something could be sacred AND worthless (maybe you would say that about a blade of grass, having life but not useful as currency - I'm guessing here since I reject the sacredness of stuff) or NOT sacred AND NOT worthless, like a car (capitals for boolean operations).

I don't believe life is sacred (a religious term and thus one I reject) OR worthless. Life is worth a lot (to the individual concerned and their loved ones - life isn't worth mich on a cosmic scale of course).

And Gob is quite right - you cannot have degrees of either. I have never heard anyone say "That relic is 70% sacred". You can have an object that is "almost worthless", but by that very definition it means it is not worthless. These two terms are black and white. They are not like properties such as translucence, that can have degrees. And you could say "Big or small or somewhere in between". But not between two words that are by their very nature absolute and not even antonyms.

Very well put Stoat.

To say that a non-religious person's life is worthless because they don't consider it (or anything else) to be sacred is nothing more than high-handed bigotry.

Mind you, I bet if I used a secular term (and a real antonym of worthless) and asked you if you believed that life was precious your answer might be slightly different... ;)
