870,000 NY City Photo's

Post by oldr_n_wsr »

Here are some of the pictures.

The on line gallery has all the photo's but due to overwhelming demand, it's busy right now.

OMG fantastic!!

I just looked at the sampling in the article & can't wait to get on the archives sometime soon. I wish my parents weren't such Luddites and had Internet; my dad would love these, as he grew up in NYC in the 30s, 40s & 50s.

I really want to thank you for posting that oldr....

What a treat....

I'd seen a few of the photos before, but that's a fantastic collection...I could get lost in that for hours....(I'll have to check out the link with the more extensive collection)

My personal favorites are the ones that really capture the ethnic vibrancy of early 20th Century New York.

A very good preview and one hopes to be able to see more in future - thanks Oldr

Interesting description by the caption writer (and he/she used it twice):
The Hells Gate Railroad Bridge looms in the distance
I wondered which of the following that awful Hells Gate Railroad Bridge was actually doing?

loom 1 (l m)
intr.v. loomed, loom•ing, looms
1. To come into view as a massive, distorted, or indistinct image
2. To appear to the mind in a magnified and threatening form
3. To seem imminent; impend

n.
A distorted, threatening appearance of something, as through fog or darkness

You are all welcome, glad to do it.
I like the guys standing on the suspension wires (no harnesses and in suits?) on the bridge. That would never happen now-a-days.
